Update for volunteer coordinators

Dear <<First Name>>:

I hope you are safe and well.  

Thank you to everyone who submitted questions and joined us for the fireside chat between CEO Lucy and chair of trustees Rev Brian Leathard on 18 June. In case you missed it, you can still watch the video back on our website or watch and share on Facebook.  

We will be taking a break from fortnightly updates over the summer but you can follow all of our latest news and updates on our website and our social media channels (@glassdoorlondon on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn).  

Also, please do share news of our annual Sleep Out taking place on Friday 2 October. For the first time, participants can choose between sleeping out in their own homes or joining at Duke of York Square, if government guidance allows. Participants won't have to decide until closer to the date but can sign up now.  

We will of course be back in touch well before the shelter season is due to start again with details of how we will be safely delivering services that keep people off the streets this winter. For now, please find casework updates and other news below.

Casework updates: 
From employment coordinator Jay: I have been continuing to work with guests to try to secure employment opportunities either for post-lockdown or to start right away. Despite the difficult climate for employment, one guest has successfully started working as a hospital porter and another as a cleaner in the past few months

From caseworker Lewis: I have helped two people access the universal credit they were entitled to this week. I have also been supporting a large family who fled from a war-torn country and I identified and alerted the authorities to an exploitative work situation. 

From caseworker  Michelle: Two guests who haven't engaged for a long time are now engaging, thanks in part to the hotel scheme. I have also prevented a guest from being evicted. He could not pay rent because he lost his job due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Hasen’s story: In his own words, Hasen shares how caseworker Michelle helped him find housing and the mental strength to carry on after his niece died. Read the story.

We respond to £105M funding pledge: “I think the progress made in the last few months has shown us that sifting and sorting people based on complicated criteria wastes precious time and resources. Everyone is worthy of safe housing,” said CEO Lucy. Lucy and senior caseworker Neil are quoted recently in the Financial Times, The Big Issue and the Independent live news feed. Find out more. 

Fundraising superstars: Charlotte Rather has been making face masks and donating 50% of the proceeds to Glass Door. Here are her daughters wearing the masks on public transport. We have had a wonderful response to our face mask appeal. For example, Hayley from Pins & Bobbins is making one face mask for a guest for every order she receives.
