Jeremiah 28:5-9

5Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the LORD; 6and the prophet Jeremiah said, "Amen! May the LORD do so; may the LORD fulfill the words that you have prophesied, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the LORD, and all the exiles. 7But listen now to this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. 8The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. 9As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the LORD has truly sent the prophet."

Reflection

Have you noticed that it is a lot easier to spread hate and violence than peace and love?

A peaceful gathering is often marred by violent words or actions. Throughout history there are examples of groups getting together only to be overtaken by a group of people expressing the opposing view. More often than not, it ends in some sort of violence.

There is one place, however, where we are free to gather in peace—in Christ’s church. In Christ’s church we can get together and protest the hate in the world. We can protest the violence in the world. We can come together and pray for peace. We can preach peace and speak peace and pray for peace.

With God we can believe in peace and hope for it. We may not see the peace we hope for in this world, but we will absolutely see it in the world to come! Through our belief we can hope for peace and achieve it in our hearts and minds because we know that one day we will have everlasting peace.

Prayer

Dear God, in this world where hate often wins out over love, thank you for the promise of everlasting peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
