29th Annual Scholarship Essay to Focus on “Humility: A Shankleville Heritage”  (The application deadline for 2020 is July 15th)

2020 marks the 29th anniversary of the Shankleville Memorial Scholarship Program.  Through almost three decades, the Society, with the help of your dollars and time, has given financial assistance to more than sixty students with Shankleville roots.

The 2019 recipients were:
First Place - Jessica Johnson
Second Place - Kayleigh Tyler
Third Place - Jordan Black
Fourth Place - Kameron Tyler
Fifth Pace - Jameson Christoper

As in the past twenty-eight years, each student for the 2020 scholarship competition will analyze this year’s characteristic of “Humility,” and reflect on how humlity is an important aspect of the Shankleville legacy.
Each year, the deadline for mailing the written file for the Shankleville Memorial Scholarship (application, essay, and letters of recommendation) is July 1; however, this year the deadline is extended to July 15th.   Please plan accordingly for 2020.  Get details about scholarship rules and the application process at www.shankleville.org/homecoming/scholarship. Because of COVID-19, we will not have the oral presentation.

The following will be the scholarship awards based on the written applications:
First place - $300.00
Second place - $200.00
Third place - $100.00
Fourth place -$50.
Fifth place - -$50

Texas Purple Hull Pea Festival Update

The Shankleville Historical Society made the prudent decision to not bring people from all over Texas and Louisiana to the Shankleville Community this  June because of concern regarding the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The Seventh Annual Texas Purple Hull Pea Festival was cancelled; however, we are excited about resuming the festivities next June 26, 2021.
The festival has grown over the years and was featured in the June issue of Texas Highways Magazine. We expect continued growth in future based on the festival's ever-increasing attendance in the past three years.
See photos from the 2019 festival in the following link:

Next year’s programming will highlight a Matthew Honer Clay Jr. Memorial Concert featuring C.J. Chenier & the Red Hot Louisiana Band.  Also performing will be Derwin Daniels & Friends.  Festival activities will kick off at 9:00 a.m. with a number of pea-related contests including pea cooking and  pea shelling.
For pictures of past TX PHP Festivals and up-to-date information about TX PHP Fest 2021, be sure to “Like” the festival Facebook page.

We have transitioned to electronic communication only!

All communication will be via electronic media (Facebook, Twitter, email, text messages, etc.). The annual newsletter will also be delivered electronically .  Be sure to log into the Shankleville Historical Society website and register for future updates.  Pass this information to any of your family members who would like to receive periodic updates.
