Remembering Bridget Bishop, the first woman executed for the crime of witchcraft in Salem, on 10 June 1692. The Salem witch panic began with fear and envy and ended with the torture and imprisonment of more than 150 women and men. Twenty were found guilty and executed. At least four more died in prison. This day is always a time for me to pause and reflect on how failures of empathy, compassion, and generosity lie at the root of so many evils in the world. We can make sure such a thing doesn't happen again by speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves, refusing to stand by while others are made into monsters simply because they are different, and not turning away when we see an injustice being committed, no matter how small.

Our backyard has turned into a Gulf Frittilary Butterfly hatchery. Passionflower vines are their preferred plants. Photo shows tiny red egg ready to hatch into a splendid orange and black-spined caterpillar like this one seen in the back industriously munching leaves.

Four months without a kitchen (because of a remodel) means we are now baking all the things everybody else has been eating during pandemic. Major comfort food--followed by long, socially distanced and masked walks, or a ride to burn it all off!

Today I walked in the beautiful @thehuntingtonlibrary gardens. It was breathtaking to be outside and to have a place to reflect on the importance of diversity to survival. As Rabbi Loew says In SHADOW OF NIGHT, "Toleration is not always enough." We must embrace and truly value diversity, not just tolerate it. Diversity is what makes us strong, beautiful, powerful, and resilient.
