Parliament's role is more vital than ever during COVID-19
In COVID-19 times, Parliaments and other government institutions are subject to the same social distancing measures as other public and private organizations. Yet, in a time of crisis, the role of parliament is more vital than ever to pass emergency laws, allocate resources and scrutinize government action. Some parliaments are modifying laws and procedures to allow for remote working, some have continued meeting physically and some have recessed altogether. The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is helping to facilitate inter-parliamentary coordination and solidarity by sharing examples of how parliaments can continue to legislate, debate and scrutinize the actions of government in a time of lockdown and social distancing.

Acting on an initiative inspired by Latvia and prepared by 12 other co-authors (Australia, Chile, France, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Lebanon, Mauritius, Mexico, Norway, Senegal and South Africa) 130 countries of the United Nations Organization (UN) have delivered a cross-regional statement on countering widespread disinformation, in other words, fighting the "infodemic", in the context of the COVID-19 health crisis.

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs presents its compliments and refers to Resolution E/CN.5/2019/L.3, entitled “Policies and programmes involving youth” which requested a comprehensive report on the implementation of the resolution including progress on the achievements and challenges in the implementation of the World Programme of Action (WPAY) for Youth including linkages to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Member States, United Nations Agencies, Funds, Programmes and Offices, and relevant Civil Society may wish to provide information via this survey. In addition to a general update on the implementation of the WPAY and the 2030 Agenda, this survey will focus on three thematic areas: 1. youth poverty alleviation, 2. digital global economy, 3. juvenile justice and youth & the law.
Youth for the purposes of this survey is defined as 15-24 for statistical purposes, however, we welcome additional data for young people up to the age of 30 for this survey if available.

The United Nations Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth (OSGEY), the Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on the Commemoration of the United Nations’ 75th Anniversary and Devex, are excited to announce the launch of an Essay Competition for the best essay by a young person on the topic ‘The Future We Want, The UN We Need’.
Young people between the ages of 15 and 29 are asked to share their views and suggestions about the UN’s future role by answering the question: Within the context of the “new normal” that has unfolded post-COVID-19, and as we plan and re-build to recovery, what does the future of the UN look like to you?
The deadline for submissions is 29 June, 2020.

The Registration for the Multi-Stakeholder Hearing on the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women is now open for NGOs in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council. (Registration for Specially-accredited stakeholders will be open soon afterwards.) Due to COVID-19, the Multi-Stakeholder Hearing will be held on a virtual platform on 21 July 2020.
Registration is open until 10 July 2020 at https://indico.un.org/event/34558/
Once the registration has been approved, your representative will receive online participation details in the days prior to the event commencing. Please note that the number of participants should not exceed three (3) representatives per organization.
