CELEBRATION ACTIVITIES OF 30TH ANNIVERSARY
RESCHEDULED TO 2021
We have existed for 30 years and have been giving an award to more than 120 artists from the African continent and the diaspora. We have made a program with many institutions in and outside Europe, who have been working with us and always have been involved in the program of our research residency. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, our plan has be to adjusted. However, we are happy to announce that our activities will be rescheduled to 2021, and we are looking forward to it!
We are producing a publication, with a focus on the artist in residence. We will distribute it for free at various festivities, both national and international. For the publication we work with The Art Momentum (https://theartmomentum.com).Ten alumni of the Thami Mnyele Foundation Award will be interviewed by African writers as well as Dutch writers.
In the Netherlands, we offered a number of residencies in 2021 to institutes and people who have supported us all those years and stood by the artists. The institutes are the ZAM Magazine, Amsterdam Museum, Rijksmuseum , Stevenson Gallery and the Prince Claus Fund. Together we are making a selection for a few Thami Mnyele Foundation Award artists in 2021.
- With the ZAM Magazine platform we have invited artist from Morocco, Adam Belarouchia. He will focus on the live of Thami Mnyele who died 35 years ago .
- We organised an event together with ZAM and with Gavin Jantjes artist from South Africa who knew Thami Mnyele very well.
- With the 1.54 African Art Fair Marrakech, we gave an award to the Nigerian artist Lakin Ogunbanwo.
- With the Rijksmuseum we will invite an artist in 2021 who will be working in the artist in residence during the period of the Slave Trade exhibition, with a focus on the Dutch slave trade.
- In 2021 The Prince Claus Fund will receive the artist during the award ceremony and the network period of the fund.
- Afrovibes will also participate and we will be inviting an artist from Nigeria.
- Witte de With will participate with an artist from south Africa.
- Enough Room for Space / One-Trade-Off will participate in the residency with an artist from Congo in the month September 2021.
- The AGA Lab will give all invited artists free workshops in their lab.
- The Ateliers will welcome the artists and will be hosting them for talks and meetings.
- The Rijksmuseum is also interested in the collection of the Thami Mnyele foundation.
- The CBK Zuidoost is preparing an exhibition focusing on alumni who work in Europe, this exhibition is planned in December 2020.
- Amsterdam Trail/ Gallery Lemaire will invite alumni of the Thami Mnyele foundation to participate in the yearly trail where contemporary artists will show in the ethnographic galleries in Amsterdam.
- Framer Framed will show alumni of the Thami Mnyele Foundation from Curaçao and Suriname at the end of the year, together with Marcel Pinas, artist from Suriname.
- Manifesta offered a dinner.
- With Gassworks London and TransArtists / Dutch Culture we are planning a symposium about residencies.
Different galleries , art initiatives and museums will give attention to the relationship we have with them: SANAA Gallery in Utrecht, Stevenson Gallery Amsterdam, No Mans Gallery in Amsterdam. The National Museum in Harare Zimbabwe , Dakar Biennale, Lumbasi Biennale, High Museum Atlanta and many others will be showing alumni of the Thami Mnyele Foundation Award.
