Our Mission
We, the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon, share in the mission
of Jesus by proclaiming the Good News of God's love.
Letter from the Superior General: July 2020
Dear Friend,
Sr. Michael Francine
I am humbled and honored to greet you as I start my new role in leadership with the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon.  On Sunday, June 28, 2020, Sr. Denise, Sr. Sara, Sr. Rita and I, with the affirmation of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon, publicly promised to serve the SSMO community. Click here to see photos of the Mass and Installation service.

As we develop our Leadership Goals, we will take into account the current unrest in the world.  We now have to learn, like the rest of the world, how to navigate life in COVID time.  This does not change our vows; it does not change our charism; and we are committed to living a balanced, holy life, putting God first, with Mother Mary as our model.  Together, we worship our God, live in community, and continue in ministry where safety is paramount - being mindful, there is not a ministry so important that we cannot take the time to do it safely, nor without putting on Christ.

For me, we are in God's time, a time to pray, respect, have care for creation and the common good, and ensure that others’ rights and responsibilities are recognized.  As St. Paul tells us, “Conduct yourselves in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ.  If you do, whether I come and see you myself or hear about your behavior from a distance, it will be clear that you are standing firm in unity of spirit and exerting yourselves with one accord for the faith of the gospel.” (Philippians 1:27-2:11)  I will pray for the virtue of courage that I might better proclaim the gospel of Jesus.

Join SSMO in the celebration! July is the time the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon have the pleasure of celebrating our Jubilarians.  On Sunday, July 26, please join us via ‘Live Stream’ to wish Sr. Joyce Barsotti, Sr. Elizabeth Sohler, Sr. Rose Mary Heineck, and Sr. Theresa Hathaway, congratulations for their years of service.  Our Jubilee is the anniversary of the Sisters' vows as Religious Sisters in community.  We are celebrating 60 years with Sr. Joyce and 70 for Sr. Elizabeth, Sr. Rose Mary and Sr. Theresa.  Together these sisters have 270 years of community commitment.

My friends, have a safe and happy July 4th, and please know I am praying for all of you every day.

Yours in Christ,
Sr. Michael Francine Duncan

Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon: A Valiant History

Sunday, June 28 marked the first time a service in our chapel was "live-streamed" on the internet for the Leadership Installation. The chapel was completed in 1936, just in time for the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon's 50th Jubilee. To learn more about the Our Lady of Perpetual Help chapel, and to see the beautiful stained glass windows, click this link, for a 2016 video tour.

Congratulations to the Class of 2020

It was a most unusual, but very joyous, "drive-through" graduation for the class of 2020. Click here to see the video of the very special VCHS 2020 graduation.
