Kia ora Kāpiti

It's been a busy week at Council, with the draft Economic Development Strategy now available, the Annual Plan adopted, and the Independent Organisational Review published. You can find out more about all of these by reading on.
For those with children it's been a funny term, but the end is in sight – school holidays start this weekend! Our events section is back with great activities to keep busy, and make sure you check out our No8 Wire events!

Economic Development Strategy public engagement

The Economic Development Strategy for our district is being refreshed. The strategy provides a roadmap for iwi, business, community and the Council to foster a vibrant, diverse local economy.

The draft has been developed collaboratively with local businesses, iwi and community representatives to ensure it reflects local views and economic insights, and that there is an implementation plan with deliverable actions and agreed accountability.

We’re keen to hear your thoughts on the draft strategy, so check our website for more information, and complete a short survey to have your say by 5pm, Thursday 9 July.

Independent Organisational Review welcomed

Yesterday Mayor K Gurunathan released the Independent Organisational Review of the Kāpiti Coast District Council report commissioned in June 2019 by the Mayor and Councillors.

The review identifies a number of things that the Council is doing well, along with 29 recommendations covering areas where improvements can be made to lift our collective performance.

As an organisation we will be taking some time to digest the review's findings before providing a formal response to the Mayor and Councillors.

You can read the report at 2019 Independent organisational review on our website.

New mural brings vibrancy to Mahara Place

A new mural to brighten Mahara Place and honour the artist Frances Hodgkins is complete, and looking great!

Started before the COVID-19 lockdown by local artists Kate Hartmann and Ruth Robertson-Taylor, the mural depicts the artist, who had a strong connection to Waikanae and the Kāpiti Coast, and two of her textile designs.

The mural is the latest piece of public art for the Kāpiti Coast, adding vibrancy to the recently rejuvenated Mahara Place and showcasing an important part of our artistic heritage.

2020/21 Annual Plan adopted

Kāpiti Coast District Council has formally adopted its 2020/21 Annual Plan.

This sets out priorities and budget for the coming year, balancing ensuring the Council can continue to deliver essential infrastructure and services and support the community to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19, while operating within its financial means.

The plan requires an average rates increase of 2.6 per cent for the year ahead, an average weekly increase per rates bill of $1.65. This is down from a 5.7 per cent increase for the 2020/21 financial year that Council was considering prior to the onset of COVID-19.

Visit 2020/21 Annual Plan for more information.

Plastic recycling changes from tomorrow (1 July)

From 1 July, transfer stations and your kerbside collector will only accept plastic types 1, 2 and 5 for recycling. These types make up 87% of plastics, and can be recycled and repurposed into useful products in New Zealand.

Sometimes it’s hard knowing your plastics – this short clip will help you identify the right ones to wash out and put in your recycling.

To find out more visit Rubbish and recycling on our website, or contact your collector.

Challenge4Change

Challenge for Change recently celebrated the 12-month mentoring journey of nine young people in Kāpiti. The early intervention programme is aimed at 9–13 year olds, and provides support to both the young person and their family, to improve their ability to reach their potential and lead fulfilling, productive lives. It includes challenges, fun group activities, and quality time with mentors on a weekly basis. These activities have helped participants build their confidence and increase resilience. For more information about the Challenge for Change mentoring programme, contact c4c.info@kit.org.nz

Council funds Challenge for Change through the social investment programme, and it is coordinated through Kāpiti Impact Trust.

Dog registration now due

All Kāpiti dogs over three months of age must be registered by Friday 31 July 2020 or penalties will apply.

It’s easy – you can register online and we will post your tags to you, or you can pop into any of our service centres. For more information check out the Dogs section of our website.

If you have any questions about dog registration, give us a call on 0800 486 486 or email us.

Safety the driver for Raumati Village roads

Raumati Village roads will be getting a safety upgrade in the coming years. With around 2,300 children using these footpaths each day, safety improvements are needed and Council will be focusing on intersections and crossing points used to access schools and shops.

Improvements for the next year include installing raised tables to lower speed, and improving crossing points for pedestrians near the Rosetta Road/Victor Road intersection and at the Matatua Rd/Alexander Rd intersection.

Further work is planned for future years, subject to funding and community feedback.

#LoveLocal #LoveHipsta

Hipsta started as a small temporary pop-up shop in Paraparaumu Beach selling ethically sourced handicrafts and clothing. Three additional shops and 21 years later, the Hipsta crew are still going strong!

COVID-19 has necessitated a number of changes for owner Debbie – like starting up an online store during lockdown, and sourcing new products from New Zealand suppliers rather than manufacturers overseas.
We stopped in at the Paraparaumu Beach shop for a chat about how things are going.
