Evidence-Based Loss Prevention: Factors Affecting the Validity and Reliability of Loss Prevention Research

Throughout history, individuals, groups, and organizations have gone to great lengths to protect members of their communities and their property. This need for security arises from a simple fact best summarized by the philosopher Roger Scruton – “good things are easily destroyed, but not easily created.” This is as true today as it was a millennium ago – a tribe could work an entire planting season to have their harvest ransacked by others.

Today, many retailers have spent years, decades, and even centuries building good things – businesses and brands that satisfy the needs and wants of the public through mutually beneficial trade. If organizations do not use effective strategies to secure their facilities and prevent losses of all kinds, they risk financial ruin.

A transformational leader with a remarkable record of achievement, General Stanley McChrystal was called “one of America’s greatest warriors” by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. He is widely praised for launching a revolution in warfare by leading a comprehensive counter-terrorism organization that fused intelligence and operations, redefining the way military and government agencies interact.

From 2003 to 2008, McChrystal commanded the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) - responsible for leading the nation's deployed military counterterrorism efforts around the globe. His leadership of JSOC is credited with the 2003 capture of Saddam Hussein and the 2006 location and killing of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq. In June 2009, McChrystal received his fourth star and assumed command of all international forces in Afghanistan.
