Welcome to the seventh edition of the PANORAMED newsletter!

This issue is a special edition exclusively focused on Innovation as one of the important strategic themes PANORAMED is working on. Despite the delicate health emergency situation we are all going through, the platform continues with its activity, it is fully operational, and is looking forward to sharing with readers the latest progress achieved in this field.

INNOVATION POLICIES AND THE BLUE BIOECONOMY IN THE MED

PANORAMED's work on innovation reached a very important milestone back in January 2020 with the presentation of the Gaps and Growth Opportunities Report for this thematic area. The document is structured in two parts that focus, respectively, on the potential of blue biotechnology and the better governance of innovation policies. Dr Andrea Barbanti introduces the analysis carried out and shares his insights with us. Read more

B-BLUE PROJECT ON THE WAY !

The Strategic Projects on Innovation are progressively becoming a reality and the Communications Team of PANORAMED has been lucky enough to get a first exclusive interview with Mr Cristian Chiavetta from the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA), Lead Partner of B-Blue project, to discuss some of the key features and objectives of this upcoming initiative. BETTER GOVERNANCE FOR BETTER INNOVATION

In early June, the Key Policy Paper on Innovation was adopted unanimously by the 12 countries that are part of PANORAMED. In this way, another important milestone has been reached within the framework of Axis 4 - Governance in the form of relevant recommendations for a challenge-oriented Mediterranean innovation policy. The policy paper aims to influence the current debate about the next MED Cooperation Programme.

CALYPSO - AN INNOVATIVE SUBMARINE MADE BY STUDENTS

At Gimnazija Vič, a Ljubljana-based high school, teachers and students became researchers within the Calypso innovation project. The goal was to build a submarine that could sink to a depth of 1,000 meters to collect data on various environmental parameters and include water samples, which could later be analysed in the school laboratory. GOVERNANCE: THE MISSING LINK FOR A SUSTAINABLE BLUE BIOECONOMY?

Dr Heloise Berkowitz gives us further insights on the in-depth investigation she carried out and published in January 2020 under the title "Participatory governance for the development of the blue bioeconomy in the Mediterranean region". As she mentions, this principle needs to be more systematically integrated in all local and transnational transition projects as well as future funding programmes. Read more

HOW CLUSTERS CAN PROMOTE THE CREATION OF SHARED VALUE

Dr Xavier Amores introduces his paper entitled "How clusters can contribute to social and environmental challenges through the Creation of Shared Value" and published in February 2020. In just few paragraphs, he explains the importance of promoting the CSV concept in the field of blue bioeconomy to meet PANORAMED's objectives. Read more

BLUE BIOECONOMY: CHALLENGES AND NICHES FOR GROWTH

Ms Iva Milašinčić is the Head of the Development Unit of the Croatian Agency for SMEs, Innovation and Investments (HAMAG-BICRO) where she is in charge of more than 10 EU and national projects.
