Georgia AUXCOMM works with ARES to participate in the American Red Cross Shelter exercise on 5/30/2020
On Saturday, May 30th, over 2,500 amateur radio operators across 40 states and territories as far west as Hawaii, north to Alaska and south to Puerto Rico supported the American Red Cross (ARC) in a two-part disaster communications exercise. The exercise simulated a national grid-down with the ARC opening comfort shelters with radio operators providing shelter emergency communications.
Exercise part A, held in the morning, involved local VHF/UHF voice and data communications between the shelters, emergency operations center (EOC) and local Red Cross headquarters. Where possible simplex communication was used to determine if shelter sites could communicate with out the use of repeaters.
Part B, conducted in the afternoon, involved long range HF communication submitting an ARC shelter Form 6409 supplies requisition request. The request was sent using using Winlink digital data messaging with a strong focus on peer-to-peer communications. For many operators this was their first field experience with use of the NBEMS flmsg simplified agency mode of operation. (There are a set of flmsg custom forms specific to supporting the ARC.)
Locally, within the greater Atlanta metro area, Georgia AUXCOMM, the various county ARES and other radio groups established "virtual” shelters respecting shelter-in-place and social distancing. A number of operators set up portable, off-grid radio operations in the vicinity of an actual ARC approved shelter site. Weather in the greater Atlanta metro was quite nice with a gentle breeze allowing for a pleasant outdoor day of operation.
You can count on Georgia AUXCOMM, ARES and the American Red Cross to support our local community in a time of need.
