Hey, Cola, Lauren here. If you know me, you probably know how much I love ice cream, especially in the summer. Columbia’s heat brings the need to cool down + honestly, what better treat to do the trick than ice cream? 🍦
For all of our fellow ice cream lovers, we’ve put together a round-up of spots around Columbia to grab ice cream + other cool treats to keep you from melting this summer.

Coronavirus

○ DHEC reported the highest number of deaths associated with COVID-19 in a single day yesterday with 69 total and 3 probable; however, the deaths occurred over the past few weeks. To clearly provide the actual dates of COVID-19-related deaths, DHEC has published a "COVID-19 Deaths in South Carolina by Date of Death" graph on its Testing and Projections webpage.
○ SCDEW reported the first increase in unemployment claims in weeks, which officials caution may be a result of seasonal trends. Approx. 670,000 South Carolinians have filed for unemployment since mid-March. (WLTX)
○ The 2020 Columbia Greek Festival has been cancelled. Organizers of the event stated they would have been unable to comply with COVID-19 health + safety guidelines. (WIS)
○ Kroger announced earlier this week that all customers will be required to wear a mask when shopping in stores. There are four locations in the Columbia area. (ABC Columbia)
○ Target + CVS Pharmacy to require all customers to wear a mask. CVS’s mandatory mask policy will go into effect nationwide on Mon., July 30, while Target’s will go into effect August 1. (WIS)
○ The Irmo Okra Strut will continue as scheduled on September 26. The event, which is held on St. Andrews Rd., will have safety precautions in place. A parade will kick off the festivities to honor essential workers. (Cola Daily)

○ Allen University is on its way to become a NCAA Division II member + will begin the three year provisional process in the 2020-21 school year. University officials believe the move speaks to the school’s growth and will be an opportunity to increase enrollment. (The State)
Biz
○ femme x Columbia, a new women-powered social club and workspace, is coming to 1501 Richland St. The space, aimed at advancing economic + political growth for women, will offer co-work areas, wellness amenities + events. The building is expected to open in October 2020. (WLTX)
Edu
○ The owner of the Carolina Panthers and his wife are starting a new scholarship program in UofSC’s Department of Sport and Entertainment Management. The scholarship, The Nicole and David Tepper Scholars Program, will provide four year, merit-based scholarships with a focus on diversity and first generation students. The couple gave more than $500,000 dollars to start the program, which will give recipients $10,000 a year. (WBTV)

○ BlueCross BlueShield of SC is joining together with other organizations to launch Diabetes Free SC – an initiative to address disparities in care for those with diabetes. $11.6 million was awarded by The BlueCross Foundation to local hospitals and organizations to start the initiative. Cause
○ Carolina Children’s Home is awarding $200,000+ in scholarships and grants to local students and nonprofits. The donation will be broken into 16 $5,000 scholarships and $127,000 in donations to local nonprofits. All donations go towards Carolina Children’s Home’s mission to “meet the underserved mental and physical health needs of children, young adults and their families.” (Midlands Biz)

○ Zombie Coffee and Donuts announced a summer “Donut of the Month” line-up, including the blueberry-filled “Berry Patriotic” for July, gummy bear-topped “Beach Life” for August + UofSC-themed “Game Time” for September. Team members also came up with beverage pairings for each donut. Currently, Zombie Coffee and Donuts is open Wednesday-Saturday for pick-up and delivery.
