Plan to make data work for you
June 2020

Welcome to our June 2020 DMPonline newsletter!

Our monthly newsletter will keep you updated about new features, functionality, and important days for your calendar.

THIS MONTH

You will find a summary of our drop-in session where we were joined by Jacques Flores, from Utrecht University, we launch a survey on the administrator interface, share a video tutorial on how to create themed guidance and dates for upcoming online DMPonline user community drop-in sessions.

Welcome our DMPonline summer intern - Theo Higham

Theo Higham has just joined our team as a student intern. He will spend the summer with us designing and carrying out usability tests.

Theo is studying Computer Science at the University of Edinburgh. Last year he took the Systems Design course, where students work in groups to build an assistive robotic device, controlled via a software interface. In his team Theo was is charge of designing and testing the interface.

'I enjoy the cycle of research, prototyping and testing since it allows me to come up with several creative concepts and then find out which is the most practical in a real usage scenario. I gained huge insight into effective design decisions from witnessing first hand how users interact with the system, since they often attempt actions that I never would have thought of myself.'

Theo will be joining some of the DMPonline user group meetings and some of you will also get a chance to meet him during one-to-one interviews and observational usability tests.

Take a part in our administrator interface survey!

As mentioned in the entry above we are very happy to be joined by Theo Higham who is working this summer with Diana on usability testing. Their work will focus on the admin interface, which has acquired a lot of new functionality over the last couple of years. We would like to assess whether the interface works for you, what works well and what could be improved. The initial survey is very brief and should take you around 10 minutes to complete. You can also register interest to be interviewed in the survey.

Update to ESRC template in DMPonline

A few minor changes were made to the ESRC template in DMPonline on 4th June 2020. These don't change the content significantly and only introduce a few slight rewordings and fix broken links. We periodically review the various inputs used to create DMP templates and make updates where necessary to ensure our content is as up-to-date as possible.

Read more about the changes here.

Short summary from April drop-in session

In our DMPonline April drop-in session we were joined by Jacques Flores who shared with us how Utrecht University uses DMPonline. Using DMPonline started slowly at Utrecht University mainly because the users did not know about the tool. Data management plans are not mandatory at Utrecht University but they are recommended. The user base at their institution is growing and they currently have around 600+ users. They are focusing on streamlining DMPonline into their work and making this an obligatory course for first year PhD students.

We are very grateful for so many of you volunteering to become our monthly guest speaker by February 2021! Our DMPonline drop-in sessions are open to all and it is much appreciated by our DMPonline community to hear how are other institutions and countries are using the tool and supporting research data management. I want to say big thank you for volunteering, the recording are available in the following playlist. We are always open to suggestions so if there is anything specific you would like us to focus these sessions on please contact us directly via email.

Time to bid adieu by Sarah Jones

At the end of this week we will be saying goodbye to Sarah Jones who has been our amazing boss, colleague and friend. She will be very much missed in our DMPonline Team. We are though not saying goodbye as one never fully leaves DCC but we wish her all the very best in her new exciting role. Patricia Herterich has recently joined our team to take on some coordination tasks. Sarah has put together lovely blog post which you read when you click on the link below.

Research Data Management: The University of Stirling Experience

This month we are featuring a blog post from Lisa Haddow from the University of Stirling.

"The University of Stirling’s research data management (RDM) support is the responsibility of my team, the Library and Archives Research Support Team, but in reality that actually means me!  Having supported research data management for at least 10 years I feel my expertise and ability to provide support has greatly improved over the years – but the nature of change, means I’m always learning."

DMPonline Tutorial - Creating themed guidance

As part of the DMPonline tutorial video series this month we demonstrate creating themed guidance. This allows you to tag associate questions and guidance so administrators can apply their advice over all templates at once. This alleviates the need to update guidance each time a new version of a template is released.

Please let us know which features in particular you would like us to demonstrate and we can prepare help materials and add them to the user guide.

Days for your calendar

Each month we run monthly virtual drop-in sessions for the DMPonline user community where you can ask us questions, learn about new features, and meet fellow subscribers.
