Learning More Healing More

Meeting for Worship Together

This coming Sunday at 10, we will gather as a whole community for worship, followed by some special music, afterthoughts, Joys and Concerns and announcements.  All one Zoom.  Join any time, leave any time. Zoom sign in information will be provided on Friday in Silent Announcements. Many thanks to Alden and Connie for hosting the Friendly Eights worship --- which has now grown to about three times its intended size!

(Friday's Silent Announcements will be published late on Friday, in order to include some yet-to-be-decided calendar items.)

Moving? Forward? Together!

Please join in one of these four scheduled sessions for shared reflection about what our next steps might be for resuming any kind of in-person gatherings at the Meeting House.

The sessions will be held via Zoom on:
  • Tuesday, July 7, at 7 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 8 at 10 a.m.
  • Saturday, July 11 at 10 a.m. and
  • Sunday July 12 at 4 p.m.
There is no need to sign up ahead of time; connection info will be sent out to everyone closer to the date.  Please just find one that will fit in your calendar and plan to join in. It is important for as many of us as possible to reflect together on the many questions that come up as we look ahead.

If you have questions, comments, or suggestions, about these sessions please contact Carole Hoage or Cheryl Morden.

... because Black Lives Matter

Living into Anti-Racism in Our Faith Community

Like our fellow citizens and residents in this country and people of goodwill around the world, Quakers are trying to learn what it means to be anti-racist and how to incorporate that concern fully into our faith community.  Below are two resources that Ministry and Worship wishes to bring to your attention.  We ask that you reflect how these resources might relate to the work and practice of the meeting.

Queries from Baltimore Yearly Meeting
The first is the 2019 Declaration by Baltimore Yearly Meeting as an Anti-Racist Faith Community The declaration describes our shared commitments:  "We aspire to recognize and affirm diversity as a means to truth...  We approach racism as a virus to be healed... We are committed to becoming more inclusive and welcoming to all... We strive to do more to build and maintain trust... We seek to ensure that we do not benefit some at the expense of others." The declaration also suggests queries to guide and test the decisions that we make:

"Using queries to examine how our decisions may promote inclusiveness, allow equal access, and welcome those we perceive as different from ourselves could, we believe, guide us in our deliberations. It will also make us more accountable for our actions and less likely to be satisfied with a statement that sounds laudatory, but proves empty or even harmful.  In that regard, we seek to always be able to answer the following queries:
  1. How could this decision affect those who have been harmed by racist behavior?
  2. To what degree have privilege, class, stereotypes, assumptions, and our ability to include other perspectives affected this decision? Will this decision promote equity, diversity, and inclusiveness? Will it enable us to be more friendly and whole?
  3. How will we provide opportunities for those most likely to be directly affected by our decision to influence that decision?
  4. How does this decision support the declaration of our Yearly Meeting that we are an anti-racist faith community?"
Public Statement of the American Friends Service Committee
The second resource is the American Friends Service Committee's public statement on racial justice, released on June 4.  "As a Quaker organization," the statement reads, "the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is inspired by the fundamental truth that there is human dignity in every single person. In order to live those values, we need to change our economies, schools, health care systems, and every institution in our society."  The statement focuses on the crucial role of police and the criminal legal system in upholding white supremacy.

Refueling for Justice

Daquanna Harrison is leading the efforts to organize Refueling for Justice, a free, online event taking place Saturday, June 27th where those who have been striving for justice can refuel for the long-haul with meditation, movement, children's activities, art, and music. Adelphi Friends can support this event in three key ways: 1) donating to keep the event free for all, 2) attending or advertising the event, and 3) volunteering to staff a "tech support shift" during the Zoom webinar. Visit www.refuelingforjustice.com to donate, sign-up to attend, and learn more. You can also contact Sarah Gillooly

Becoming Anti-Racist:  Resources for the Journey

Visit our new page of Anti-Racism Resources.  Wondering about what you can do to make a difference today? Take a look at  Justice in June, which maps out things to do each day.  Or see where you are on the  Scaffolded Anti-Racism Resources, and pick a next step that works for you.

New:  Friends Journal has published an antiracist reading list for young people -- from ages 3 through middle school and above.  And here's a link to the broadcast of the Poor People's Campaign:  National Call for a Moral Revival with clips from events in all the states. This link will be listed under Inspiration in our WHIRLS resource list!

Send a message to the editor via an on-line form. Provide essential information (date, time, etc.). Feel free to add informal notes in the description box.  The editor is probably going to edit it anyway.

During the pandemic, Silent Announcements are sent out on Tuesdays and Fridays at about noon.  Please submit items before 10 a.m. on those two days.

To Schedule a Virtual Committee Meeting

Send the info below to:  Zoom2@adelphifriends.org

Your e-mail should include at least the following information:
(1) the title of the meeting (e.g. Finance Committee meeting),
(2) the date and time,
(3) recurring or one time only – if it is recurring, what is the schedule (2nd Tuesday of the month), including beginning and ending dates,
(4) contact person, and
(5) any special considerations (e.g., you need a technical person to help out or to host, you need someone to control breakout rooms).

Note that the specific Zoom invitation info for these committee meetings should NOT be put in Silent Announcements.  Instead put in the Silent Announcement a contact person who will forward the zoom invitation to the committee members.  You can also just send the zoom info directly to the committee members without a Silent Announcement.
