As the world has been on hold for us all for some months now, we wanted to let you know how life is in Chama, Zambia – where our school project is located – how it has been affected by Covid-19 and to update you on the school's progress.
Much progress has been achieved already, including the large structure for the main classroom block, the Head Teacher's house, toilets, showers and a dormitory.
Updated video and full details further down this email.
We are now ready to raise the roof!
The next stages of the project are the raising of the roof on the main teaching block of 4 classrooms and the construction of the big dormitory building for the girls. If we can raise sufficient funds to achieve these two goals, the Chama school will become a reality for the community here and the first intake will be able to start in January.
Further push needed
We need a further push to complete this next stage, so that young girls in Chama can have an education that will allow them to have choice in their lives. Children today are living in challenging circumstances throughout the world and the young girls in Chama need all the support we can give them to ensure that their world is a better one.
COVID-19 Pandemic
Covid-19 has thankfully not hit Zambia as badly as some other countries. However the economic hardship has been enormous. Lockdown across the country, tourism ceasing and borders being closed have caused loss of employment for many people and the ripple effect has been huge.
Being one of the world’s poorest countries, Zambia doesn’t have the same response capabilities as we do in Europe. Work on the school stalled due to Covid-19, but is now back up and running.
Focusing on
The Power of Education
There has never been a more crucial time to focus on the power of education and the completion of Chama school for girls. We are making steady progress thanks to your generosity, but we have to keep the momentum going to complete the next stage.
We would love your continued support...
We are asking you to consider donating to enable the second phase of the project to reach completion by the end of this year, ready for the first intake of pupils in January 2021 at the start of the new school year in Zambia.
We are looking for £5,000 to complete the classroom block before the October rains arrive. This will enable us to raise the roof on the classroom block, plaster inside and provide desks and chairs.
Your donations will help to obtain roofing supplies for the classroom block, plus cement, concrete and reinforcing steel rods for the main dormitory, paint and school furniture.
Any help you can give at this time will be invaluable.
