CoronaVirus UPDATE

As of June, most of Indiana Dunes National Park has reopened! Buildings are open on a limited basis and all beaches besides Lake View and Central are open. Due to continuing COVID-19 concerns, Indiana Dunes encourages social distancing, frequent hand-washing, and masks. For details on park operating hours and COVID response please visit the park's website.

Volunteer programs have gradually resumed (schedule below: "Volunteer Program Reopening Plan") and the Park Connection office is now open every Wednesday 9am-3pm.

With Chicago beaches closed, we are seeing record visitation to the park. We recommend West Beach for lake access since it has by far the most parking. Please call 219-395-1003 before visiting the park to hear parking updates. To stay updated on event cancellations and park closings, please visit our Facebook page. Resources for coping with COVID-19 can be found here.

Thank you and stay healthy!!

Volunteer Spotlight

Andie Renner-Miller
Andie Renner-Miller

Although Andie is a fairly new addition to Indiana Dunes' volunteer force, she has made a quick impression. She has been involved in the Park's volunteer program for a little over a year and will be one of the first crew members of the brand new Beach Cruisers program! Even while events were on hold for most of early 2020, Andie kept putting up volunteer hours by completing several park-related online trainings. When she's not volunteering at Indiana Dunes, she works as the Vice President of the non-profit Friends of LaPorte County Animal Shelters Inc. and is a founder of the Print Pile and Book Exchange of LaPorte County. She says her commitment to civic involvement was inspired by her late mother, who was also a dedicated volunteer. We here at the Dunes are lucky to call Andie a friend and thank her for her devotion to her community!

Drop-in volunteering provides hassle-free opportunities at Indiana Dunes! With no previous sign-up or experience required, drop-ins are perfect for those with just a few hours of free time. Events are held on the third Saturday of the month at the Park Connection Office (618 N. Mineral Springs Rd.). Another easy way to volunteer at Indiana Dunes National Park is through Trash Trekkers, a drop-in litter clean-up program! Simply check in at the Visitor Center on Route 49 to receive trash bags, then choose from one of our many beaches or hiking trails to collect trash. Visitors are awarded with a free, reusable water bottle for filling up their bags.

Calling All Carpenters!

We are seeking skilled carpenters and painters to be part of a small rehabilitation project of the historic Charles P. Nelson house on Mineral Springs Rd.

This location was formerly known as the Sugar Bush Farm. Our goal is to use this location as a pancake and pie house for our Maple Sugar Time and Apples Festival!

If you are interested in joining the team please contact Volunteer Program Manager Jim Whitenack for details at 219-395-8832.
