Over the past decade of implementing Sunday Streets across San Francisco, we have had the honor of building deep relationships with the people and institutions that power our communities.

Even though we're not able to gather and celebrate in the way we used to right now, every one of those relationships and every bit of our knowledge and skills are being put to work reaching the same goal - supporting resilience and health, especially in Black and brown communities who have long suffered from a lack of investment and over policing. 

Part of what that looks like right now is helping minority-owned small businesses reopen and get online so they can continue to be the backbone of commercial corridors and their communities. 

Below you can read about one of our partners, April Spears, a female Black entrepreneur in the Bayview.

Restaurant Owner Inspires Recovery in the Bayview

Meet local chef and entrepreneur: April Spears.

“Grilled oysters and Louisiana gumbo, that’s what everyone’s been asking for,” explained April Spears as she served yet another order of her famed dish at the reopening of Cafe Envy in the Bayview on June 13. 

Cafe Envy opened 2 years ago, and is Spears’ second restaurant. Her first, Auntie April’s Chicken, Waffles, and Soul Food opened in 2008 during the recession.
