In This Edition:

I hope this finds you well.

The Small Business Administration has once again opened applications for its Economic Disaster Loan and Advance program. It had been closed since mid-April.

This program provides up to $10,000 that will not have to be paid back to eligible small businesses and agricultural businesses that have experienced a temporary loss of revenue due to COVID-19.

Business owners apply to the SBA and will receive the money directly from them. They do not have to work with a bank.
More information and a link to apply can be found here.

Small businesses located in San Jose can get more information and any questions answered by emailing the city’s Economic Development Department at covid19sjbusiness@sanjoseca.gov.

County Hazardous Waste Programs Resumes

The County’s Household Hazardous Waste program has now resumed taking appointments after being closed to the public since the beginning of the pandemic.

Household hazardous waste includes unwanted products labeled flammable, toxic, corrosive, or reactive. Common products include auto fluids, batteries, electronics, fluorescent and LED lightbulbs, garden chemicals, household cleaners, paint, and many other products that require proper disposal to prevent harm to the environment.

Available drop-off appointment dates may be for several weeks in the future as the number of appointments has been limited each day to ensure the health and safety of residents and staff. This service is free for residents.

Face coverings are required to drop off waste. Residents without a face covering will be turned away and not allowed to drop off their waste.

You can find more information about the service and make a drop off appointment here. Appointments can also be made by calling (408) 299-7300.

Businesses that generate small quantities of hazardous waste may qualify to use the County's Very Small Quantity Generator program. Information about that program can be found here or by calling (800) 207-8222.

While so much of our attention in recent months has been focused on COVID-19, the public health challenges that our region usually faces unfortunately have not gone away.

This includes the West Nile virus. The County’s Vector Control District has found adult mosquitoes that test positive for the virus in parts of the City of Santa Clara, including the area adjacent to Mineta San Jose International Airport. They will be ground fogging the area, which includes portions of zip codes 95050, 95051, and 95054, tonight, June 23.

The public plays an important role in preventing the spread of West Nile virus, especially be eliminating standing water outside residences and in yards. Mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water.

Drain, remove, or turn over anything that can hold water including flowerpots, planter bases, bird baths, toys, cans, rain gutters, pet dishes, buckets, and old tires.

Do not let your swimming pool water fall below the pump circulation area. The district also offers free mosquito fish placement for placement in unmaintained pools or ornamental ponds. You can request the mosquito fish by calling (408) 918-4770.

You can find more information about the West Nile virus, and how the County is combating it, here.

Be well,

Cindy
