On Wednesday 17 June at 6pm, Mayor of Port Stephens, Ryan Palmer went LIVE on the Port Stephens Council Facebook page with other members of Council staff to answer questions from the community.

The live stream was well received by many residents and the recording has now been viewed over 6,000 times. A huge thank you to everyone that got involved and sent in questions and tuned in on the night.
Incredible By Nature
Destination NSW and Destination Port Stephens have just launched a new tourism campaign - Incredible By Nature - aimed at inspiring young and active couples to the region.

Destination Port Stephens Chairman Andrew Macdonald said the Incredible By Nature campaign puts the natural wonders of Port Stephens front and centre. “The seascapes and landscapes here are an idyllic backdrop for the many amazing experiences that feature in our campaign — from quad biking and sandboarding down the largest moving dunes in the Southern Hemisphere, to swimming with wild dolphins and hiking through bushland to the top of Mount Tomaree,” Mr Macdonald said.
Hey, good looking!
Fern Bay multi-sport court is looking great after a makeover!

This court was constructed to complement the existing recreation facilities at Vardon Road Reserve. The concrete based court can be used for range of sports including futsal, basketball, netball, handball AND it has a rebound wall for tennis practice!

The facility was completed last week and is now open for play, so what are you waiting for?!

Stinker's history
PSToday has joined forces with legendary local John 'Stinker' Clarke of the Tomaree Museum Association, who's providing us with some classic Port Stephens snapshots. Thanks Stinker!

In the 1940s, Port Stephens was considered to be, “the biggest oyster farm in the world” with extensive areas under oyster racks in North Arm Cove, Swan Bay, Cromarty Bay Little Swan Bay, Oyster Cove, Karuah, Tilligerry and Pindimar. Vital to the booming industry was the labour of the local Worimi people. The Ridgeways, Russells, Mantons and Lilley families were but a few of those who contributed in a big way to the growing industry.

Many of the Aboriginal families grew up in the town of Karuah and moved to Oyster Cove to work for a leader in the oyster industry, Stan Phillips, who provided accommodation and education for the kids. In the words of well-known Worimi man John Ridgeway, “Everyone was happy working for Stan Phillips. I paid £7 a week when we moved in to Oyster Cove. 23 years later after raising eight kids I was still paying £7 a week”.

Worimi families remain in the oyster industry to this day. Their remarkable contribution over the years has been outstanding.
Weekend Sunrise visit
On Sunday 14 June, Weekend Sunrise visited our beautiful Nelson Bay in a special campaign run by DestinationNSW titled Love NSW. They visited a couple of local businesses and talked to PSToday's history columnist John 'Stinker' Clarke. It is lovely to see a place we are so proud of being put on show to the rest of Australia.

Similarly, last week the gang at Hunter Hunter threw Port Stephens some love and wrote this lovely article on some of the best things we have to offer — make sure to show it to all of your out-of-town friends!

Works like these are a great reminder of the beauty that is right at our back door.
Back to the books!
Wonderful news for many residents of Port Stephens last week as our libraries re-opened! Raymond Terrace Library, Tomaree Library and Community Centre and Tilligerry Community Library are now all open and operating with reduced opening hours.

The mobile library also got back on the road last week, with an interim timetable.

And, if reading isn't your thing, maybe swimming is? Port Stephens pools have also started re-opening this week. Tilligerry Aquatic Centre is currently operating with reduced hours and Lakeside Aquatic Centre's indoor and outdoor pools are due to reopen this Saturday 27 June.
