Re-building Pupils' Practical and Enquiry Skills in Secondary Science
- 8 July, 3-4.15pm

Pupils' skills in working scientifically are essential for engagement and success in GCSE science and beyond. However, during lockdown, most pupils will have had little opportunity to engage in practical science. This webinar - part of the Mayor of London STEM webinar series - will focus on how teachers can give pupils a boost in developing these skills and increase their confidence in refining and applying them.

The webinar will cover:
  • the role of practical work and scientific enquiry in clarifying concepts
  • how to adjust the curriculum in the short-term and improve the way we deliver science lessons in the longer-term
  • ideas, resources and strategies that can enhance curriculum planning of these skills.

To register for the webinar, visit the Eventbrite page.

Remote Science Teaching Forum - online - 30 June, 2-3pm
Four of the STEM Learning Science Learning Partnerships' best facilitators will deliver a short, fully-funded, session on the remote teaching and learning of secondary school science, sharing best practice in preparation for next year. It will be an opportunity to share ideas about how to keep students engaged with online learning in science, including:
  • online platforms and tools
  • virtual practicals, at-home practicals and planning for practical work next year
  • further ideas for engagement.
To book, visit the STEM Learning website.

Triple Science Network meeting - 30 June, 3-4.30pm

  • Primrose Kitten talking about producing video, remote learning and her current school projects
  • Tunde, London Teacher Coordinator from the Royal Academy of Engineering, will introduce their latest free resource box, "Code and rescue", and their programme
  • Raj, School Improvement Director at E21C, will be giving us his views on "Back to school: strategies to identify the gaps and designing a recovery curriculum in response"
  • Jim Henderson giving highlights from his highly evaluated CPD, "Meeting the new OFSTED framework in secondary science"
  • Lewis Matheson, from A-level Physics online, Ogden Trust and all things physics, shedding some light on the Physics' tricky bits.
All are welcome to join this free online Network meeting which is funded through the Triple Science Support Project. It is suitable for trainees, NQTs, new September starters, teachers, science leaders and STEM leads.

Careers webinars
As part of STEM Learning moving STEM Ambassador activities online, they are offering careers webinars aimed at pupil aged 11-19. Each webinar will feature a different group of STEM Ambassadors and will cover a different topic. The next in the series is 'Being a Smart Cookie (Being decisive and confident)' on 9 July, 4-5pm. To book, visit their Eventbrite page.
Free online GCSE Science lessons
Peason Edexcel have launched a series of free online GCSE Science lessons, developed to be relevant for all awarding bodies, delivered by Primrose Kitten, an experienced science teacher with a passion for helping students to achieve their best.

From 5 June, one 45-minute lesson will be published on YouTube each week that showcases science and its real-world applications. Each lesson focuses on a different topic and is tailored to the various stages of science learning, so you can choose the ones that are right for your pupils.

For details of the lesson timetable and topics, visit the Pearson Edexcel website. To watch the lessons that have already been published, visit the Pearson Edexcel YouTube channel.
Imperial College School of Medicine Vision 2020 Conferences
ICSMSU Vision is an outreach society run by medical students from Imperial College School of Medicine. They are running two free events this summer to support students from all backgrounds to prepare for medical school entrance exams and apply for medical schools:
  • UCAT & BMAT Day
  • Mastering your Medicine Application Conference.
The UCAT & BMAT Day is aimed at preparing students for medical school entrance exams later this year and will be held on 1 August 2020. It will be composed of small group tutorials taught by professional tutors and experienced medical students. They will focus on personalised teaching, with small class sizes, and each student will be given the chance to ask questions and receive individual feedback.

The Mastering your Medicine Application Conference is aimed at students preparing an application to medical school later this year and covers the UCAS and interview stages. This will be held on 20 September 2020 and provisionally consists of:
  • individual personal statement feedback
  • MMI-style interviews and feedback
  • an ethics session
  • talks from eminent physicians and current students of Imperial College Medical School.
Due to current circumstances, both events will be delivered online using Microsoft Teams. Once registered for an event, students will be given detailed instructions on how to join.

For further details and to apply, see the links below.

Diversity in Science virtual event -  9 July, 10-11.30am
The aim of the Diversity in Science virtual event is to build a culture in science education where difference is valued, and part of what makes science inspiring, because diversity drives innovation and science needs innovators.

This free online event will feature a panel of experts discussing their own experience, current initiatives and what else can be done to further support diversity in science. Chairing the discussion will be Andrew Bazeley from the Fawcett Society and the expert panel will include:

  • Penny Tysoe, Engineering Development Trust
  • Aadil Laher, Star Academies Trust
  • Mary Howell, STEM Learning
  • Payal Jain, Women in Data
  • Jessica Hamer, Institute of Physics
  • Henna Nathwani, Pearson Science Qualifications and Women in Learning and Leadership representative
  • Ade Gachegua, Pearson Assessment and People Representing Interests of Minority Ethnicities (PRIME) representative
500 delegates can participate and places are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. If you are unable to participate live, the event will be recorded so you can watch it later..

To register to attend, visit the Pearson website.

Share your experience of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on practical science
As an intrinsically practical subject, science education has been particularly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, with difficulties in carrying out practical work set to continue as schools and colleges return. The Association for Science Education (ASE) has launched a survey to capture teachers' and technicians' views on the opportunities and challenges for practical work as more pupils return to school.

The survey takes no longer than 15-20 minutes to complete and no information is collected which identifies you or your school/college. By sharing you views and experience, you can help shape the delivery of quality practical science from September onwards.

If you are a science leader or teacher, click here to complete the survey. If you are a science technician, click here to complete the survey.
