Dear ECPMF supporter,

Founded in 2015, today, the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) marks its fifth anniversary. The vision of the Centre is a society where media freedom enables open discourse and everyone can seek, receive and impart information. ECPMF’s mission is to promote, preserve and defend media freedom. We do this by monitoring violations, providing practical support and engaging diverse stakeholders across Europe.

As we mark this significant FIVE, help us make the next 5 years even bigger and better. You can do this by donating 5 EUR and nominating 5 friends to do the same. You will be supporting press and media freedom across Europe. Because you know what? ‘There is no freedom without media freedom’.
ECPMF in Europe

ECPMF is specifically serving Europe. We have provided journalists and other media professionals with direct practical and legal support to help them continue their work in the face of significant hardships. We have comprehensively monitored violations: our Mapping Media Freedom has recorded over five thousand violations of press and media freedom. Our analyses have shown that government/state agents/public officials are the main sources of threat to journalists and media workers. We have used these data and other facts to put recommendations in the hands of decision-makers and successfully campaigned for change. We have championed cross-border investigative journalism and promoted media literacy and open dialogue. Our impact has been tangible. Just recently, together with our partners, we started the Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR), a Europe-wide mechanism, which tracks, monitors and reacts to violations of press and media freedom.

Nevertheless, our region is experiencing an undeniable deterioration of press and media freedom. The number of threats and attacks against journalists and media workers is rising. The gap between the principles enshrined in the EU Charter on Fundamental Rights and the reality on the ground grows ever wider. Not only in authoritarian states and countries in transition, but also in places with strong democratic constitutions and long democratic traditions. We need to respond by working fiercer, faster and louder than ever.

We thank you for your support in the past five years and look forward to working with you in the coming years to make our work even bigger and better. Remember, there is no freedom without media freedom.

All the best,
Faith Miyandazi, head of communications, for the ECPMF team
