SUSANNE BARTSCH PRESENTS PRIDE 2020: ON TOP OF THE WORLD
ATTEND THE VIRTUAL CELEBRATION AND WATCH THE DOCUMENTARY
In honour of LGBTQ Pride Month, nightlife legend Susanne Bartsch presents NYC Pride 2020: On Top of the World, a virtual celebration with DJ’s, performers and hosts from around the world including Zurich-based DJ-Oh and DJ Déesse, to benefit the Ali Forney Center whose mission is to protect and empower LGBTQ youths. Born in Switzerland, Susanne Bartsch has become the queen of New York’s nightlife, a patron saint of transformation and inclusion, creator of legendary parties and founder of the Love Ball (1989) raising awareness and funds for those directly affected by HIV/AIDS. To this day, she continues to organize extravagant happenings in New York such as the cabaret inspired Bartschland Follies at The McKittrick Hotel, as well as events around the globe. With all performances halted due to COVID-19, Susanne Bartsch adapted her social gatherings to the virtual platform: “Bartschland events have moved from the club to the couch, plans were rearranged to support my community in its continuation of growth and connecting people, particularly during difficult times. Not knowing where nightlife will stand at the end of this journey, it became my mission to keep momentum growing, and to continue to be able to provide creative, innovative, and expressive outlets and spaces for people during uncharted and stressful times.” Attend Susanne Bartsch’s virtual celebration Pride 2020: On Top of the World and watch the 2018 documentary Susanne Bartsch: On Top here. The documentary explores Susanne's life through never-before-seen archival footage, from quiet moments at home to her life as a one-woman industry creating vibrant spectacles.

Go on a culinary tour of Switzerland with Chef Yannick Germanier and discover Sii, the classic dessert from the canton of Valais. Traditionally made from rye bread and elderberry juice, the compote is also known as Hollermües, a composite of the German words Hollunder (elderberry) and Mus (purée). Chef Yannick prepares the dessert with red wine, dark raisins and serves it with lots of lightly whipped cream. Watch Yannick prepare Le Sii Valaisan here and find the recipe in the video description.

When Leon moves from Germany to join Mario’s football club in Switzerland, the two develop an immediate connection on and off the field. In a desperate attempt to protect their love affair and their budding careers from bullies, they enter pretend relationships with women. Mario, directed by Marcel Gisler, is a tender tale of love in a world of image consciousness, toxic masculinity and intolerance. A modern romance with no happy ending, this film is a reflection on today’s society and its prejudice towards the different. Watch Mario here

My name is Matthias Dettling and I have been the Cultural Counselor since July 2016. Now, my suitcases are packed and I’m starting a new assignment at the Swiss Embassy in Poland next week. I thank all our partners, in particular the cultural institutions in NYC and beyond, with which our Consulate has had the joy and privilege to collaborate on so many memorable occasions over these past four years. With my pick for this week, I invite you to learn more about the living traditions of Switzerland. The impressive online inventory includes 199 traditions and is testimony of our diverse and rich intangible cultural heritage.
