ICUDDR First Virtual Conference:
Educating and Promoting Addiction Science in a Virtual World
Join us July 13 – 15th, 2020 for the first official ICUDDR conference online! We are excited to bring experts from around the world to your screen. Because we know many of you are struggling with moving instruction online and making other adjustments to ensure physical distancing, we have also decided to adjust our agenda to provide support for your immediate needs. You will find presentations on technologies and tips for engaging students, how to teach skills in an online format, and how to rise above the noise of COVID-19 to continue your academic program development in Addiction Studies among others. UTC Walk Through in Africa
African regional trainers in the UTC have stepped up during this time of COVID-19 and are providing a walk through to 40 participants in their area electronically. Didactic and active learning occurs through the online platform, as well assignments and questions and answers through a Learning Management System. The trainers and participants have shown amazing commitment to the project, meeting 6 days a week and handling technological and other challenges with grace as well as being creative about teaching certain concepts without the use of the traditional "energizer" activities in a classroom setting.

Current Research on Addiction Studies
Recently published in the Journal of Substance Use, the article "Overview of university-based academic programs in addiction studies in Africa" by Amalie Lososova', Kim Johnson, William Sinkele, Isidore Silas Obot, & Michal Miovsky, maps and describes University-based addiction studies programs in Africa, as part of international research.

The development and implementation of substance use prevention and treatment education and training curricula in the academic setting presents numerous challenges. It can be helpful to assess where are you in the five-stage implementation process such that you best know how to proceed. Stage A: Needs assessment and preparatory work Stage B: Curriculum development and adaptation Stage C: Curriculum implementation and building the study program Stage D: Ensuring sustainability of the program; stabilizing the process and developing the academic components and activities Stage E: Establishing a quality policy: monitoring, evaluation, and updating
