Ministering in Cambodia

By Debbie Toivola

Our daughter, Julie, was commissioned with the C&MA in 2007 to minister in Cambodia. She worked with churches in teaching Sunday School teachers. She met her husband, Phearom Chham, during her term.  They married in 2010 and came back to the U.S. where they spent the next 6 years preparing to return to Cambodia with the C&MA. During that time Phearom finished a Masters Degree in Theology at Crown College, became a U.S. Citizen, did an Internship as a Youth and Outreach Pastor, was Ordained with the C&MA and they had two daughters.  Unfortunately, they were not commissioned with the C&MA.  So, in the summer of 2016 they returned to Cambodia and began their own ministry, The Family House Ministry, to the poor.

I retired from the University in 2017 so that Andy and I could spend significant amounts of time in Cambodia with our daughter and her family and help them with their ministry. In preparation, the two of us completed an online TEFL (Teaching English to Foreign Students) course.

We have had the privilege of going to Cambodia for five months at a time during the fall of 2017 and 2018.  During our time there, Julie and family lived in the capital city, Phenom Pehn.  Andy and I were able to help them with a week-long Skills Training Camp, teaching English to children and adults, giving out food to the poor and taking care of the grands.  In 2018, they were able to purchase land and build, what they are calling a Guest House, on some property in the province of Kampong Speu (about 2 hours from the capital city) with the hopes of starting a ministry center.  They have been able to hold English classes for up to 30 students of various ages.  Since Covid19 all classes have been suspended.  However, our son-in-law, Phearom, is always out and about building relationships and sharing the gospel with the people of Cambodia.

Julie and her family were here in Minnesota from October 29 – January 6. We were blessed to be able to spend this time with them. Especially doting on three of our grandchildren: Serena (7), Alena (6) and Moses (2). While here they spoke in churches and met with friends and family to raise support. It was a very fruitful time for them.

Andy and I are now planning our next trip to Cambodia this fall. We will be gone from November through April. We like to say that we snow-bird in Cambodia 😊. This time will be very different for us as we will be living in the province which is completely off grid. We are again looking forward to helping our daughter and son-in-law with whatever they are doing at that time to minister to the Cambodians as well as spend precious time with them.

Dr. Kyle Wilson - 9/22/26 - 6/26/20
It is with great sadness to announce that former faculty and alumnus, Dr. Kyle Wilson '51 passed away last night at the age of 93. 9/22/26 - 6/26/20. While we are saddened, we rejoice as he was ushered into the loving arms of his savior, Jesus Christ who he served faithfully his entire life. Dr. Wilson served at Northwestern for over 20 years in the late 70's - 90's in a variety of roles including Dean of Men, Campus Pastor, Director of Mission Ministries and the Director of Male Chorus.
Please be in prayer for the Wilson family as they mourn the loss of their father and grandfather and celebrate a life well lived.
More information to follow in the coming days.
Farewell to Kirby Stoll

It is with great sadness and great anticipation that I share with you that Kirby Stoll’s tenure at Northwestern is coming to a close: Kirby has accepted the position of President of Children’s Shelter of Cebu, a non-profit for which he has served as a board member for the past 10 years.

In his new role, Kirby will be serving homeless and abandoned children in the Philippines, which will require travel and ministering on site while maintaining the Minnesota-based office here in the Twin Cities. The Children’s Shelter will benefit from the many skills and talents Kirby brings to its mission, and it will be exciting to see how God uses this UNW alum for His glory. Kirby has served Advancement and the university well and will be deeply missed.

Kirby’s last day will be July 24.
