Lightning Safety
It’s summer storm season and you should talk to your crews about the dangers of lightning.  We have a host of resources for you on the topic.  Courtesy of the WV LTAP, see their Summer 2012 newsletter article.  We have also developed a tailgate safety talk that you can draw from to brief your personnel on lightning dangers and best practices, rich with resource links.  Finally, you can print out this brochure as a poster for the break room and/or circulate this OSHA  Fact Sheet to your personnel.
High Friction Surface Treatments
One of the proven safety countermeasures for crashes involving wet weather, centerline crossing, and run off the road is also an Every Day Counts initiative from Round 2.  High Friction Surface Treatments are a spot countermeasure for areas that have pavement friction issues contributing to crashes.  When selected for the right areas and properly applied, they have proven to reduce crashes, as discussed in this Indiana LTAP newsletter article and in the materials provided by the Federal Highway Administration in the link above.

Bridge Deck Preservation Treatment Options
The result of deferred bridge preservation can be a progressive decay of bridge elements to the point that costly rehabilitation or replacement of the bridge are required earlier than the planned life cycle.  Just like pavements, we can extend the useful life of our bridges and enjoy better performance by utilizing low cost preservation techniques and technologies.  The Transportation System Preservation Technical Services Program (TSP∙2) is a great resource for training and technical information related to the preservation of pavements and bridges.  Their bridge preservation website is rich with videos and other training resources…Read More
Inspector's Daily Diary
Construction inspectors are the nexus between an excellent design and a well-executed construction project and one of the key roles the inspector plays is the keeping of disciplined, contemporaneous records.  There are many forms of documentation an inspector may prepare, depending upon the agency requirements and the nature of the construction project, but almost all inspectors keep what is often called a daily diary…Read More
Innovation Highlights - Building Better Mousetraps Part 1
While we wait to hear the winners of this year’s nationwide Build a Better Mousetrap competition, let’s take a look at some past submittals, first from Delaware, and then some from across the nation.  Personnel in municipalities, counties, DOTs, and other agencies across the country come up with so many great ideas.  The Build a Better Mousetrap competition is intended to ferret them out for all to see and we’ll show you where to view annual catalogs of submittals as a great rainy day activity for the crew…Read More
