Niagara Falls Cultural Development Fund Recipients
NIAGARA FALLS, ON - June 29, 2020- The City of Niagara Falls Culture Committee has selected 5 new cultural initiatives, innovative programs and projects to receive funding from the 2020 Niagara Falls Cultural Development Fund. The initiatives, programs and projects will engage the community with high-quality, accessible, cultural and heritage-related ideas and activities that celebrate Niagara Falls’ history, people and identity. They will be delivered throughout the year at various locations and events throughout the City, observing strict social distancing policies in place at the time.
The Fund was created in 2016.
2020 Recipients
Mental Health Fair // Creations in Quarantine
10 different artists will create 10 separate art pieces that express the artist’s feelings and mindset during the COVID-19 pandemic. The artistic featured in this online art show are photography, visual arts, film, and other creative multimedia projects. The online exhibition will take place over 10 weeks starting in September and feature one artist per week to promote their work and engage a Niagara-based online community exploring the ways art and artistic expression can help us navigate the mental, social, and cultural impacts of the current pandemic. The artist commissions will also be digitally exhibited on a Niagara Mental Health Fair website.

NFAG Website Modifications
Upgrade and update the existing websites to increase accessibility to Niagara Falls Art Gallery’s programming and collections as well as to develop and generate new interactive content. Develop new artist inspired content in the form of artist studio demonstrations, artist and specialist lectures and children’s online art activities in order to develop a library of online programming and to supplement and develop capacity to new audiences in a new way. Develop on-line exhibitions drawn both from our permanent collections and also from community exhibitions in order to provide new viewers exhibition content. Provide links to community artists and their studios and exhibitions.

Stories from the porch
A weekly summer event where storytellers are hosted on the front porch of our home and the audience engages from the front lawn, and a monthly event hosting music on a front porch. The format of Stories From the Porch lends itself well to a temporary transition to a digital format until such days as we may once again gather in groups. Stories From the Porch will air live on Facebook and be uploaded to YouTube.

Students of A.N. Myer Exhibition
An exhibition of artworks by the students of A.N. Myer secondary school that will introduce young artists to the art world. They will get a behind the scenes look the art world, putting on an exhibition including curating a show, hanging, and insight into what is required of an artist to gain exposure.

Vision 2020
An exhibition of 25 artists, and 2 speakers/workshop presenters to celebrate the contribution of the women artists of Niagara Falls, this transgenerational project offers the artists an opportunity to exhibit alongside each other, to network and learn of each other’s roles within the broader arts community. One student from each of the city’s five high schools, as selected by their teacher, will be invited to participate. The opening event will include scheduled talks on: the work women do to build community and support other women, the art women make to effect change, the need to continue addressing the issue of safety in women’s work, and the role of the arts in our community moving forward. The Niagara Falls Art Gallery will host this exhibition from December, 2020 until March 2021.

"The City of Niagara Falls Cultural Development Fund offers funding to individuals, groups, collectives and organizations for the creation, production, presentation and distribution of culture and cultural services," said Clark Bernat, City of Niagara Falls Culture & Museums Manager. "The current crisis landed just as we were adjudicating the applications. Very quickly, we realized that most of the applications would not be possible, however, we knew that the creative community needed support. We are very excited that the applicants were quickly able to adjust, the adjudication committee then awarded those applicants who could continue to operate under the current conditions but and still fulfill their mandates and missions."
