Sooke Wave Pop-Up Event

Over 20 people participated in a Sooke Wave Pop-up Event to celebrate World Oceans Day, June 8.

Sooke Backyard Gardening

The Sooke Backyard Gardening program has been very successful with over 40 applicants. Recipients received soil, seeds and either grow bags or wooden raised beds.

The program is a collaboration between Food Eco District (FED) in Victoria and Sooke Region Food CHI, Sooke Garden Club and Transition Sooke.

Financial contributions came from FED in Victoria donating some of the Grow Bags, as well as a major cash donations from Sooke Rotary, Transition Sooke, and Sooke Garden Club. Personal donations from individuals ranged from an elderly lady who really liked the idea giving $10 to an out-of-province individual who heard about the program and donated $500.

Sooke Soil and Landscape donated two truck loads of Deluxe Garden Mix. The Sooke Baptist Church let us use its yard for storing and loading soil. ALM Farm donated seeds and seedlings.

Many volunteers made it all happen!
Holly from MyFEDFarm program who coordinated it from the Victoria side of things. Anita Wasiuta, Robin Zabloski and Stephen Hindrichs coordinated things in Sooke with help from:
Bernie Klassen • Mark Ziegler • Jo Phillips • Jill and Paul Marchand
Jeff Bateman • Lori Kirk • Katrina Wilson • Erin Newell • Lynn Moss
John Patterson • Michele and Kevin Atchison • Dawn Latimer
Teminey Beckers • Solange Busch • Ann Nolan • Sheila Lund
Carolyn Bateman • Kenny Jones • Wayne Jolley • John Rasmussen
(I hope I didn’t miss anyone)

Educational resources for all garden recipients are at www.get-fed.ca/education and the password is GetGrowing2020.

Here is another great resource: www.growingfood-together.com

We still have soil and grow bags as well as some funds and will soon be determining if we will do another intake in the fall or next spring. Stay tuned!

Join Team to Bird-Dog Sooke Council

Transition Sooke has renewed the practice of sending observers to Sooke Council meetings. We want to stay abreast of what our council is doing so that we can provide feedback on issues that are important to us and offer support for progressive initiatives.

But we need more people.

The plan is to attend council meetings in teams of two in the role of observers. Each team would work out how they would share the task of attending the meeting and putting a brief report together for the next Transition Sooke meeting. The team would be observers who would not speak to motions on the floor unless directed by a meeting of Active Members.

If you are willing to join the team, please email Hester, at
hvair@telus.net

(Note: Council wants to hear from the public on issues important to them and encourages residents to comment. Questions and comments on upcoming agenda items can be emailed to info@sooke.ca and those received by noon on the day of each Council meeting will be summarized, read aloud and recorded for the public record. Your full name is required and will be included in the meeting.)
