Progress on Planning and Design

With construction underway on several projects for the Yellowhead Trail Freeway Conversion Program, progress also continues to be made on the following projects in the concept planning and design stages:

  • 156 St. to St. Albert Trail
  • St. Albert Trail to 97 Street
  • Noise Reduction System
  • Fort Road Widening

Read on to find out more about the planning and design work being done in 2020.

Public Engagement During COVID-19
The City is committed to gathering public perspectives for consideration during project design. To follow the physical distancing requirements currently in place, all in-person engagement sessions have been put on hold. For Yellowhead Trail, that means we have decided to postpone public engagement planned for the spring to later in 2020.

The Yellowhead Trail team wants to make sure any engagement we do is as effective as it would be under more usual circumstances. We value your input and encourage you to participate in future engagement opportunities when they are available.
156 Street to St. Albert Trail
The City is currently working on the preliminary design for the portion of Yellowhead Trail from 156 St to St. Albert Trail, based on the concept plan that was presented to City Council in October 2015.

Here’s what we’re doing now
Contractors  will be in some areas conducting utility, noise monitoring and investigative work. While City roadway construction won’t start until 2021, some of the utility work may begin in fall 2020. The project team is planning to share the preliminary design for public feedback in the fall.

St. Albert Trail to 97 Street
The City completed Phase 1 of the St. Albert Trail to 97 Street Concept Planning Study in Fall 2019. We are now in Phase 2. At the end of the study, the City will have a preferred concept plan showing required changes to the roadway network to accommodate the closure of direct accesses to Yellowhead Trail.

Here’s what we’re doing now
Public input was used together with technical requirements to conduct an initial screening of multiple high-level concepts for the roadway network. The outcome of this screening was the development of six concepts that are being studied further to determine a short list of viable options. In addition, the project team is using public input to help confirm the criteria that will be used to evaluate the short list of options. These design options and the proposed evaluation criteria will be shared for your feedback during Phase 2 this fall.

Phase 1: What We Heard report
Noise Reduction System
As part of the Yellowhead Trail Freeway Conversion Program, the City is replacing the noise wall along the south side of Yellowhead Trail from 97 Street to Fort Road. The existing wall was built over 35 years ago and a City assessment determined that it is approaching the end of its service life.

Here’s what we’re doing now
Concept planning began in March 2020 and public engagement is tentatively planned to be held before the end of the year. Contractors were out in May to complete an assessment of the existing subsurface ground conditions along the length of the existing wall.

Fort Road Widening
The project includes the widening of Fort Road to six lanes from Yellowhead Trail to 66 Street, the widening of the CN Rail underpass and the construction of 125 Avenue, a new industrial collector road from 61 Street to 71 Street, west of Fort Road.

Here’s what we’re doing now
Preliminary design is underway for Fort Road, 125 Avenue and the CN Rail underpass. Knowing existing site information is an important part of design, so you may see people and equipment in the project area collecting soil samples, surveying the road area and completing other similar work. Underground work may begin this fall in preparation for road construction next year. The project team is planning to share the preliminary design for public feedback in the fall.
