RECAP - July General Meeting

The focus of the meeting:
"As more of us are returning to work and others are in limbo, we will offer a space to discuss our working conditions and challenges in navigating what's to come."

During the discussion, we heard some common experiences. Here were the takeaways.
1. Companies might make remote work more permanent - or at least expand the number of people permanently remote / limit the number of people in the office.
2. Some employers are starting to make workers come back to the office. Workers are rarely involved in the conversation on return-to-work plans.
3. There may be more salary reductions for those who go permanently remote and move to a cheaper geography.
4. For those whose companies went through covid-related layoffs, employees who are still at the company are experiencing significantly increased workloads without increased compensation.
5. Building worker solidarity across departments is difficult when there are no longer the natural "office cooler" discussions. Not all company employees are on Slack, either (i.e. contractors, janitorial staff, etc.).

✔️ Follow-Up Items
1. We are starting to work on a survey to collect information about tech workers’ concerns regarding how employers are responding to COVID and the subsequent economic pressure.
2. We had scheduled the third installment of the Labor Notes “Secrets of a Successful Organizer” workshop, but had to cancel it for covid. We will follow up with Labor Notes to see if they might be able to do a remote version of the training.
