Obstetric Medicine book by Dr Charlotte Frise now available

Obstetric Medicine is a small specialty with a big remit, covering all medical conditions that can affect women of childbearing age. Pregnant women regularly present with medical problems to many different specialties, and as their physiology is changed by the pregnancy, so too is the way in which many chronic illnesses behave. There are also differences in which drugs or investigations may be appropriate during pregnancy. Obstetric Medicine, the first title in a new Oxford Specialist Handbooks series covering Obstetrics and Gynaecology, is filled with links to national and international guidelines, expert advice, and evidence-based management strategies for a range of acute and chronic conditions that can occur in pregnancy. This new textbook will therefore benefit both physicians and obstetricians managing medical issues in their pregnant patients.

Bereavement Survey - Update
We have found that very little is known about providing care for women and their families after their baby has died due to pre-eclampsia, or closely associated conditions.

That is why at APEC we have collaborated with the University of Manchester to conduct research into this area. We want to ultimately improve future care and meet the needs of as many families as possible who may experience a bereavement due to pre-eclampsia in the future.

Therefore, we would like to learn about your experience if you have been affected by either stillbirth or neonatal death in the context of pre-eclampsia, through completing a survey. The survey will be open until 30/11/2020. We will use your responses to this questionnaire to ultimately help shape the care of families who go through bereavement in the perinatal period.

Thank you to all the families who have completed the survey so far: we are incredibly grateful for your help.

UK's first pre-eclampsia
screening programme successfully implemented
A team of fetal medicine specialists, led by Professor Basky Thilaganathan at St George’s, have successfully implemented the UK’s first pre-eclampsia screening programme resulting in the reduction of pre-eclampsia by almost 25% at St George’s as the rate elsewhere continues to increase.
The paper on the study is published today.
"We know that this is a really important step in women having the safest pregnancies and the team at St George's and the FMF have done some interesting work which is another very positive step in the right direction. This is good news for women."

Aspirin should be targetted to those who need it.

APEC CEO Marcus Green and Chair of Trustees Prof Andrew Shennan have written a short commentary piece on the specific targeting of aspirin prescriptions in pregnancy,
Low dose aspirin, for the prevention of early onset pre-eclampsia is an established antenatal intervention; it is safe, effective, cheap and accessible in many health care settings but there are questions regarding prescribing it to everyone.

Neonatal herpes, the cold sore virus in babies, is thought to be the cause of death for one newborn every week in the UK and the reason Kit Tarka Foundation exists. The virus is relatively rare in babies but has a very high mortality rate (~50%) even with treatment. Awareness is incredibly low even among health professionals so many babies go undiagnosed and therefore untreated, and parents are not being made aware of the dangers of the herpes virus to very young babies.

Our friends at the Kit Tarka Foundation are  trying to reach as many expectant and new parents and health professionals as possible, please have a look at their information and help spread the word. Thank you
