Virtual photography exhibition celebrating the lives of Slough’s
refugees and asylum seekers

Simons blog: Tuesday 14 July, Tears behind smiles

“The more I worked with people at Slough Refugee Support (SRS) the more I realised how little I knew and the more impressed I became by how people were prepared to share their experiences. This blog is based on my impressions while working over the last 18 months with people who have come to the UK; it’s not meant to be an exhaustive or definitive account, but perhaps a way to contribute to the conversation. The quotes aren’t necessarily attributable to people in the photos but they are real and given in response to discussions I’ve had with asylum seekers and refugees while volunteering at SRS. When people come here they don’t know what to expect; they’re often scared and worried about the future. They’re glad to be here but sad to have left the familiar and perhaps their family and friends behind. They don’t know what to expect from people here”.

Before I leave… I worried. There’s no democracy, no freedom… but I miss my country. But I’m happy to come to England, Life is better here.”

The cultures are so different here. England gives you freedom. I can think how I like and wear the clothes I like. You English, you don’t realise how lucky you are.”

But there are frustrations of bureaucracy. What looks like opportunity can often be put out of reach and time passes. Depression, loneliness and isolation can take their toll. Often, the future looks hopeful – only to turn out to be disjointed; with one step forward and two steps back.

People need to think about what an asylum seeker or a refugee hides behind a smile on their face.

About this exhibition and Simon's blog
HOME Slough in collaboration with local photographer
Simon Barber is staging a one-man exhibition entirely through our weekly newsletters. Each week we’ll publish two of Simon’s  amazing photographs, for you to consider and comment on in whatever way you wish; for example you might like to share your own stories or experience with Simon, put forward ideas for further imagery, or share examples of your own work with Simon and us as we try to break down barriers and get a conversation going on this topic, in an open, creative and inclusive way.
Global Cooking Theatre: Week 2
Online Cooking and Story Telling to Help You Brush Up on Your Kitchen
Skills During Quarantine

Saturday  18 July, 3pm, Online Via Zoom

This week's session will be hosted by Gloria, who'll be preparing jerk chicken,  jerk sweet potato and red pepper casserole and rice and peas.

Gloria was born on the beautiful Caribbean Island of Jamaica and came to the UK in the early 1960s. Gloria's been cooking since she was a young child. "I'm delighted to participate in this project.  Food is an important part of my day; I always cook from fresh and we eat together as a family. My children have all learnt to cook by watching and helping me in the kitchen, and my eldest grandson, who's inherited my love of food, has asked me to produce a recipe book just for for him. I've promised him he'll have this in time for his birthday in August.  One of the recipes I'll be cooking on Saturday features in his cook book".
How does it work?
Reserve your place to receive a list of all the ingredients you’ll need and a link to the Zoom webinar.
At 11am or 3pm each Saturday (depending on the session) join our Artistic Nutritional Creatives (The Chefs!) in a Zoom webinar, to learn how to prepare a mouth-watering array of delicious and affordable recipes a from four different continents: Europe, South Asia, Caribbean and Africa.
Each week our Artistic Nutritional Creatives (The Chefs!) will dress up in their national traditional dress and give you on a tour of their culture, while sharing stories about their food and clothing with you.
While your meal is in the oven, go offline to change for dinner and serve up, re-joining the group, to enjoy your meal, together with your chef and other participants.
The intention is to have fun, learn how to cook a new meal, connect with new people and hear about other cultures.

This project was co-created by Vision Impression Black Expression (VIBE), Slough Dominican Association (SDA) and HOME Slough.

His spoken word is a dive into a life of extreme experiences and survival, switching between comedy and philosophy to expose not only the shallower but also the deeper parts of existence. He runs an open mic (poetry/spoken word/comedy) night at The Herschal Arms in Slough called 'The Innerverse'.
