Becoming an Anti-Racist Faith Community
|
|
"Being antiracist results from a conscious decision to make frequent, consistent, equitable choices daily..." from the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Talking About Race.
|
|
|
Adelphi Meeting's Change Group offers three opportunities to support learning and action against racism:
- an accountability group,
- a book group, and
- some movie and discussion nights.
See the descriptions and contact information for each of these here. (Google doc.) The first two groups are beginning soon, but there's still time to join in.
Much more can be found here on Adelphi Meeting's collection of Anti-Racism Resources.

John Lewis: Good Trouble
Diana Rutherford writes that the Old Greenbelt Theater is offering on-line screenings of John Lewis: Good Trouble. Using interviews and rare archival footage, the 96-minute film chronicles John Lewis’ 60-plus years of social activism and legislative action on civil rights, voting rights, gun control, health-care reform and immigration. There’s also a taped interview of John Lewis – now 80 years old – with Oprah Winfrey. The film is available as a 7-day rental for $12. Once you have downloaded the film, you have 72 hours to watch it. Learn more here: https://watch.eventive.org/johnlewis/play/5ee01ea712335e00a2396a89

[Clip and save for committee meetings and meetings for business]
Using queries to examine how our decisions may promote inclusiveness, allow equal access, and welcome those we perceive as different from ourselves could, we believe, guide us in our deliberations. We seek to always be able to answer the following queries:
- How could this decision affect those who have been harmed by racist behavior?
- To what degree have privilege, class, stereotypes, assumptions, and our ability to include other perspectives affected this decision? Will this decision promote equity, diversity, and inclusiveness? Will it enable us to be more friendly and whole?
- How will we provide opportunities for those most likely to be directly affected by our decision to influence that decision?
- How does this decision support the declaration of our Yearly Meeting that we are an anti-racist faith community?

Lawn Care and Maintenance Needed Close to Home
Adelphi Meeting' s grounds are in need of mowing and weed whacking on a regular basis. We have the equipment, but we need the muscle! Do you know someone who might give our lawn some TLC on an as-needed basis? (It's roughly once a week during the summer, and hardly at all in the fall/winter.) We are especially interested in hiring a member of our neighborhood or community to do the work, but are open to suggestions. This is a paid gig. Please contact clerk of House and Grounds, Patrick Mulvey by e-mail or phone.

Need Groceries?
County Councilmember Tom Dernoga, who represents the Adelphi area, announces a “grocery giveaway” for whoever needs some good food. 500 boxes of fresh produce and proteins will be given away at the Calverton Office Park 11700 Beltsville Drive at 10 a.m. on Saturdays the 11th, 18th, and 25th, while supplies last.

To Schedule a Virtual Committee Meeting
Send the info below to: Zoom2@adelphifriends.org
Your e-mail should include at least the following information:
(1) the title of the meeting (e.g. Finance Committee meeting),
(2) the date and time,
(3) recurring or one time only – if it is recurring, what is the schedule (2nd Tuesday of the month), including beginning and ending dates,
(4) contact person, and
(5) any special considerations (e.g., you need a technical person to help out or to host, you need someone to control breakout rooms).
Note that the specific Zoom invitation info for these committee meetings should NOT be put in Silent Announcements. Instead put in the Silent Announcement a contact person who will forward the zoom invitation to the committee members. You can also just send the zoom info directly to the committee members without a Silent Announcement.
