Any River... Anytime℠

Summer is here!

Hello Anglers,

Summer is here with a vengeance, record heat and high water temps on most rivers. With water in the 72-73 degree range it is time to stop trout fishing. Warm water doesn't hold enough dissolved oxygen to revive a fish that exhausts itself trying to get away. If you must fish do it early in the morning when water is cooler, fight the fish to the net, do not lift it out of the water and cradle until it's revived. Better yet, leave them alone until water temps drop below 70 degrees.

Night time temperatures are dropping a little this week so relief may be in sight. Use a stream thermometer to decide if you should fish or not.

We can offer several fishing alternatives right now. The Pine River is one of the coldest rivers in Lower Michigan. We are one of the two outfitters permitted to run the Pine River, no one else is. Read below about the opportunities it presents.

The warmer the summer the better the smallmouth fishing usually is. Right now it's great. We fish the Manistee River above and below Tippy Pond. We can use our jet boats to fish these venues with two anglers and stay socially distant. See more about our fleet of boats and where they allow us to fish and guide.

Speaking of social distance I have been told face to face by a conservation officer that unless you are from the same household only one angler per drift boat is allowed. I have seen many guides going against this executive order. If you are in a drift boat with a friend and not from the same household everyone is at risk for a ticket. I was personally confronted by a CO the day after I had two anglers in my drift boat. Fortunately they lived together!

While this has been a year we all wish we could reboot at least it has opened up enough that we can go fishing.  Use these times to hone your skills on smallmouth or fish with us on a new river, the Pine.

In the meantime, stay safe and we will see you on "Any River...Anytime"

Chuck and Chris

The Pine River

The Pine River is the coldest and fastest river in the Lower peninsula. We can still fish it without trout mortality. We are only one of two outfitters legally allowed to fish from the United State Forest Service launches. There are some that try to run it illegally, they eventually get caught.

Due to it's small size, swift current and many rapids/rocks we fish it from a raft. This raft will hold two people normally but with social distancing we can only take one angler at a time currently.

The Pine this time of year can be fished with small streamers, dry flies and nymphs. In the last couple weeks nymphs have been the producer.

If you have and interest in fishing the Pine read this article and then give Cherie a call at 231-228-7135 for one of our available dates.

Bay and Lake Boats
The Hawkins Outfitters Boat Fleet!
Hawkins Outfitters can now offer a wider variety of trips to accommodate your fishing family.  All of our guides have at least two boats and some of us three or four!

We have three boats capable of fishing the Great Lakes, Bays and Inland Lakes. Dave Tropf has a 29' foot Tiara that he uses for Lake Trout and Salmon on Lake Michigan out of Leland. Chris has a 24 foot Young Bay boat that he takes on Grand Traverse Bay and area lakes. I have a Young 20 foot flats boat that I use the same way.

We all, including Matt Barthels have flat bottom jet boats the we use for smallmouth and other warm water species during spring and summer. In spring and fall these are our platforms for migratory fish.

All of us have standard drift boats that are used for a variety of species but especially trout.

Rounding out the fleet is a 13 1/2 foot Smith Fly raft that we use on the Pine and other small rivers.

We have all of these watercraft to offer you a wider variety of fishing options as conditions dictate and we have the USFS tags that permit us to do so legally!

Come join us on "Any River...Anytime"and lakes too!

It's Time to Book Your Upland and Waterfowl Hunting

Please read this description of the variety of hunting opportunities that Hawkins Outfitters offers. Whether it's ducks, geese, pheasant, woodcock or grouse we can do it all. Most of these hunting opportunities can be turned into a cast and blast. Hunting part of the day and fishing the rest.

Chris brings great dogs, complete understanding of game birds and a lot of enthusiasm to the field.

Call Cherie to get one or more of the limited days he has availableble.

2021 Patagonia Trout Fishing Trip

I'm again hosting a trip to Argentina, this time solely for trout. On April 10, 2021 we will arrive in Patagonia (either San Martin or Bariloche). We will be met by our host, Andes Drifters. They are by far and away my favorite outfitter in Patagonia. Gustavo and his crew do a fantastic job taking care of our every need. We will spend seven nights at Spring Creek Lodge and fish six and one and half days. We will be fishing many of the area famous lakes and rivers. Lago Tromen, Chimhuin, Collen Curra, Calefu. etc! This is fall in Patagonia, many of the rivers are beginning to see large trout migrating upstream in pre-spawn mode. They are the heaviest at this time of year.

The cost for this week of fishing is $5250, all inclusive except travel and gratuities.

For those wishing to extend your trip on day eight we will leave SCL and make our way to the Limay Medio, the river of monsters!  We will fish for migrating browns and resident rainbows. We will be looking for the elusive thirty inch brown and resident rainbows to twenty five inches. This is a luxury camping trip. All the comforts of home including electric lights, hot showers and quality tents with padded cots and comfortable sleeping bags. On April 19th we will be transported to Neuquen to spend the night then fly to Buenos Aries and on home

If you add these three days your total cost is $7500, all inclusive except travel and gratuities.

I have twelve spots at Spring Creek Lodge, five are reserved and 8 spots on the camping five are reserved so let me know any questions and grab a spot.

It will be the trout trip of your life!

Capt. Chuck
