Summer is here!
Hello Anglers,
Summer is here with a vengeance, record heat and high water temps on most rivers. With water in the 72-73 degree range it is time to stop trout fishing. Warm water doesn't hold enough dissolved oxygen to revive a fish that exhausts itself trying to get away. If you must fish do it early in the morning when water is cooler, fight the fish to the net, do not lift it out of the water and cradle until it's revived. Better yet, leave them alone until water temps drop below 70 degrees.
Night time temperatures are dropping a little this week so relief may be in sight. Use a stream thermometer to decide if you should fish or not.
We can offer several fishing alternatives right now. The Pine River is one of the coldest rivers in Lower Michigan. We are one of the two outfitters permitted to run the Pine River, no one else is. Read below about the opportunities it presents.
The warmer the summer the better the smallmouth fishing usually is. Right now it's great. We fish the Manistee River above and below Tippy Pond. We can use our jet boats to fish these venues with two anglers and stay socially distant. See more about our fleet of boats and where they allow us to fish and guide.
Speaking of social distance I have been told face to face by a conservation officer that unless you are from the same household only one angler per drift boat is allowed. I have seen many guides going against this executive order. If you are in a drift boat with a friend and not from the same household everyone is at risk for a ticket. I was personally confronted by a CO the day after I had two anglers in my drift boat. Fortunately they lived together!
While this has been a year we all wish we could reboot at least it has opened up enough that we can go fishing. Use these times to hone your skills on smallmouth or fish with us on a new river, the Pine.
In the meantime, stay safe and we will see you on "Any River...Anytime"
