Can You Participate in the Boston Poetry Marathon on Saturday, August 8?
Dear Poet,
We’re pleased to announce that it’s Boston Poetry Marathon time again! On Saturday, August 8, we are hoping you can read your work as part of this year’s online Boston Poetry Marathon.
This year’s event will be held remotely due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and out of respect for the health and happiness of our global family. This year will also be smaller in scale, with the marathon poetry reading held solely on Saturday, August 8. We are also changing the time per reader this year to five minutes only.
As of now, we plan to have the event begin at 12pm and end at 10pm. If you are interested in reading, please reply to this message and let us know:
- The top three hours from 12-9pm that would work best for you, in order of preference
- How to pronounce your name so the MC for the hour can be sure to introduce you correctly
- Your pronoun preferences
PLEASE NOTE: Because we are online this year, we have fewer time slots in the marathon schedule. As a result, spots will be available on a first come, first served basis for this year's event. If you reply after the time slots are filled, we will add your name to a waitlist. We will take RSVPs up until July 23, but we encourage you to reply as soon as possible since spots are in a first come, first serve basis.
We are still working on the technical logistics for the Saturday marathon reading, but we will ask that our readers have a Zoom account to participate. If you have questions or are unsure, let us know so we can try to accommodate you as best as possible. Again, all readers will have a 5 minute time slot to read.
We hope you will be able to come and read some poems. As usual: we are an all-volunteer event, so we don’t pay. We don’t go over 5 minutes. We listen to a bunch of poems. We hang out (virtually). We have fun (always).
While we usually fundraise to pay for the current year’s event and start to cover costs for the following year, this year we will be fundraising for organizations that fight against racial injustice, in support of Black Lives Matter. We will have details about our fundraising efforts sent out very soon!
This isn’t the event we had in mind when we began planning last year, but we hope that this online event will bring us together in some meaningful way, even though we are not in-person. We hope to come back next year with an in-person event, and to see all of your faces in-person!
Please remember that we are all volunteers, we are humans, and we are all in this together. We hope you will consider joining us in August.
