REC Recommends
You Check Out...

Need a knife, but live in a world of a million choices where the marketing hype & gimmicks make it tough to see what the real worth of a product is? Looking for reliable recommendations, but thwarted by shills and their shiny trinkets?

Maybe it’s time to visit Nick Shabazz, the
one-time kid with an embarrassingly accurate watch and nothing to time...

Nick is a YouTube and internet personality with a bit more integrity than you may be used to dealing with in the wild west of internet medicine shows. Nick takes his knives, watches and gear seriously, and he wants to help you sort through the BS. With a YouTube channel that has grown to over 110,000 subscribers over the last 4½ years, people have learned to appreciate Nick’s humorous, yet studied approach to product reviews. Pointing out the good and the bad, it is his goal to help the viewer wade through the propaganda and make the educated decision that is in his/her best interests.

What trips his trigger? What does he look for? What does he appreciate?

First and foremost, Nick looks for carefulness in design. The poorly planned and poorly executed underachievers of the gear world are quickly pointed out for the viewer to see. Passing that test, a rational review of the intent behind a product and its designers is undertaken. Did the designer agonize over the details; is it extremely functional in its intended role; is it made with quality materials; i.e. did somebody really care about this product and take the time to think it through? If the answer is yes, then it gets the stamp of approval. Maybe it’s not something that fits a need for him personally, but he has an appreciation for good design that goes above and beyond.

Whether it’s knife, a watch or his own EDC gear - take a look at his YouTube channel where thoughtful design, attention to detail, style and perhaps a bit of sentiment are merits he can share with you.

So this one time, my boss, Willy Donovan, sent me on a mission deep behind enemy lines to aid the French partisan group, Obliging and Lamentably Dignified Frenchman Against Radical Teenagers (commonly known as OLDFARTs), in their fight against a smelly & ragged, but determined bunch of teenagers holed up in Lausanne, deep in the heart of the Alsace. Though the Crimean War had been over more than a three dozen years, this stubborn group of radical teenagers had sworn to carry on their campaign of ad hominim attacks against any who dared speak against them or their gaming systems. Rarely venturing from their lairs except in search of food, when they did, these haughty ne’er-do-wells left behind a desolation of ravaged feelings, bruised egos and broken spirits. They had to be stopped.

To maximize operational secrecy, I was to be deployed near the Kamchatka Peninsula by USS Seaview submarine under the command of Admiral Harriman Nelson. I had become quite chummy with the crew and wowed them for several days with tales of my daring exploits. As it was my first trip south of the equator, I was treated to a rousing game of “hide in the torpedo tube” by my shipmates. They had failed to realize I had a Mountain Dew in my fanny pack and some sunflower seeds. These, along with practicing my
SWAT-T Tourniquet Orange deployment for entertainment, sustained me for nearly three days in this incredible tight space. Overjoyed at my success, they awarded me the official blowfish pin on the spot, insisting it was far more esteemed version of their own insignia. It was only later, when I explained how I had managed to free the torpedo from wires carelessly left hanging by the torpedoman’s mate by using my  Leatherman Super Tool 300 Black/Molle, that their slack-jawed look of amazement turned to what I can only assume was pure gratitude. Days later, it was with heartfelt sadness that they threw a party for my departure. Genuinely excited to see me off, they arranged for a 200 mile offshore deployment, insisting that my prestige demanded that I follow what they termed “standard Navy Seal practice.” With a heavy heart, the Admiral ordered the ship to surface and personally foisted my Vertx 5022 Gamut Overland Black gear bag (with adjustable shoulder, sternum and waist straps) onto the deck. Then in the time honored tradition of Navy crewman, they encouraged me along the narrow walkway and into the sea.

I had never fully appreciated water wings or noodles before, but the 8 day trip to shore gave me a new found respect. The rest of the trip was relatively uneventful, though the walk from Kamchatka to Lausanne was somewhat hampered by being forced to wear my swim fins, as I had previously lost my burkinstocks during the jellyfish attack. Arriving only a few weeks late and finding no one home or willing to answer the door, I concluded that OLDFARTs had been successful without me. And, once clear of an extremely vicious group of foul mouthed, middle aged adults, I was able to call an uber and retire to a nearby Motel 8 for a long deserved... wait, what...what?

Fine, just forget it.
