September 2020

Welcome!

To the First Newsletter of this Academic Year.

I hope you all were able to have a great summer and are fully charged up for a new year. A year that has started differently than we are used to, with most of us still only participating in online classes. This does not mean that EPU is not working hard behind the scenes to try and make this year as "normal" as we possibly can. Last week, we introduced an enthusiastic group of first-years to EPU, and this weekend, we will host an introduction weekend here in Groningen. Somewhat different than what we are used to, but the IntroCie has worked really hard to still give our new members a warm welcome to EPU. I hope you are looking forward to it, as we surely are!

In this newsletter, the 32nd Board and Introduction Committee will introduce themselves. Furthermore, you will find out when some of the future events will take place, former committee members will tell you about their experiences, and you will see the first picture of the month of this academic year! If you have any suggestions for upcoming newsletters, do not hesitate to send an email to secretary@svepu.nl

Lots of reading pleasure and hope to see you soon!

Lotte Telnekes
Secretary 2020-2021
Upcoming Events
As a pandemic-proof alternative for the annual Introduction Camp on Schiermonnikoog, EPU is hosting an Introduction Weekend here in Groningen for our first-year members! On the weekend of 12-13 September, we invite you to join us and get to know Groningen, EPU, and, of course, your fellow first-years! We will play lots of fun games, eat and drink together, and possibly start lifelong friendships! Of course, we will keep it as safe as possible, which is why we will mostly be outside (if the weather allows us to). We will start on Saturday around noon and will end on Sunday around 14:00. Food will be taken care of, so you don’t have to bring any yourself, but we are asking that you bring your own water bottle. The price for this weekend will be €15.
Sign-up here!

We hope you all had a great summer despite the current crisis. Now that a new academic year has started, it’s time for us to start meeting up again and organize activities. This is why the board is organizing a Welcome Back Drink on Tuesday the 15th of September. Location and time will be announced ASAP.
As COVID-19 is still in our midst, there is a sign-up sheet you have to fill in (there will only be a maximum amount of spots available). Be sure to join us, so you can catch up with each other while also meeting our new members!
Hope to see you there!

You can find the sign-up sheet here

A new academic year means new opportunities for joining one (or more!) of our lovely committees. A committee is a great way to actively participate within EPU, have fun, and make great friends along the way (bonus: it looks good on your CV too!)
Sign-ups will open on Monday the 14th of September, and will remain open until Friday the 18th of September.
More information can be found in this newsletter and on our website!

The sign-up sheet will open on Monday the 14th, you can find the link here!

Introducing:

The Introduction Committee

By Committee Chair Anniek Zuure

Allow me to introduce to you EPU’s 2020 Introduction Committee. Currently the loneliest committee in existence; it consists of Stijn as Secretary; Saranne as Treasurer; Thomas for External Affairs; David for Public Relations; and myself, Anniek as Chairperson.

Over the past couple of months we’ve been working behind the scenes, together with the board, on organizing the introduction period. It goes without saying that this year is burdened by a lot of limitations when it comes to organizing events. Nonetheless we’re trying to find creative solutions to be able to offer the first-years students plenty of opportunity to get to know each other, American Studies and Groningen.

With our creativity, enthusiasm and plenty of optimistic little prayers to the weather gods, we’ll be sure to host a great Introduction Weekend in Groningen!

We hope to see you all soon in some way, shape or form!

Cheers!
The 2020 IntroCie

Introducing:

The 32nd Board

By Chair Noortje van den Eerenbeemt

Dear members,

Firstly, I would like to welcome all the new members. We were very excited to meet everyone who could make it to our little hang on the introduction day. I think I am speaking on behalf of the whole board when I say that we are looking forward to getting to know you even better during our introduction weekend.
Everybody is probably sick and tired of hearing that “we live in crazy and unusual times,” but I’m going to say it again: times are crazy and different from what we are used to. This year is not going to be the same as other years, but we hope that we can keep the “EPU family feeling” alive nonetheless. To achieve this we need your help! Please join the effort of organizing fun events, and make some great friends along the way, by joining one (or multiple) of our awesome committees. I know together we will make it a great year and I’m looking forward to it a lot!

Socially distant hugs and kisses and of course EPU hoog!

Your Chair, Noortje
Committees
A new academic year means new opportunities for joining one (or more!) of our lovely committees. Below you can read the experience of some of our former committee members. More information can be found at www.svepu.nl/committees.

Are you not sure which committee to join, do you still have some questions about the committees itself, or the positions within a committee? Do not hesitate to contact one of the board members! We will happily answer all of your questions and give you more information! Sign-ups will open on Monday the 14th of September, and will remain open until Friday the 18th of September. That weekend, you will have the opportunity to book an interview for the following week. The Academic Committee
I had a great time as a part of the AcademicCie! Part of the fun of EPU is the chance to discuss interesting topics with fellow students. It is even more fun to organize activities that are interesting with and for fellow students. A great example of this is our election results watch party. There were no big elections last academic year, but we had fun watching the primaries. We also won the committee battle last year! And we didn't even get points for actually getting along, because in that case, we would have won by a landslide. To conclude, I would recommend this committee to everyone! I made some great friends and enjoyed the events that we have organized.

The Almanac Committee
Throughout the year, the AlmanacCie tries to capture all of the fun and memorable moments of EPU and put it in the Almanac, so that everyone can look back on another great year. Last year, I was the AlmanacCie’s Secretary, which meant that I took notes at every meeting. But in this committee, it is also very important to work together and make sure that every piece of text, picture, quiz, etc., fits with the theme. Last year, our theme was Comics, and we had a blast with it! It’s also a great way to secretly get to know everybody within EPU better, as you get to see every picture and read every single quote. So if you like to write creatively or can work well with InDesign and would like to document EPU in 2020/2021, then consider signing up!

Secretary AlmanacCie '19-'20

The ASH Committee
Hi! I was an editor for the ASH last year. The ASH stands for American Studies Herald and is our association’s very own online magazine. On the website of the ASH (americanstudiesherald.com), you can find all kinds of articles about media, politics and other topics related to American culture. For me, being an editor meant being able to write articles about topics that are really interesting to me! I think the ASH is a fun committee for people who would like to explore and improve their writing and is especially great for people that aspire to be a journalist. The great thing about it is that you can write about almost everything and perhaps even expand on topics you learn about in class. For example, I really liked the topic of an essay I wrote for a media class and I was able to further develop that for an article. If you’re into computers you could also take on the role of web editor, who makes sure that the website is looking good and up-to-date! Finally, if you are only interested in writing an article every once in a while, you can sign up as a freelance writer for when inspiration strikes.

Lotta Stam
Editor ASH '19-'20

The Career Committee
I am Charlotte, and last year I was part of the Career Committee, which focuses on the life after American Studies. The events could be related to a specific master or could give insights to certain jobs some American Studies students end up with. We organised a few pub lectures, one of which was about the International Relations master and the other about life in politics. They were both very interesting to attend because of the speakers, the discussions that followed, and of course the drinks with your fellow EPU members. We were hoping to organize a Conference together with the AcademicCie, but we did not get the opportunity to do so unfortunately. If you are interested in organizing events that will help you explore your opportunities after the American Studies bachelor, then please consider joining the Careercie.

Charlotte Kremer
Secretary CareerCie '19-'20

The Lift Committee
EPU organizes a hitchhiking competition every year in cooperation with other study associations. To be in this committee was very fun, because I got to work with some new people. Together we we made sure that all our participants would (eventually) arrive in the destination that we chose; last year it was Brugge! Organizing a trip for around 40 people was very challenging, but luckily we didn’t have to take care of the journey towards our destination! Another nice thing to know is that this event generally takes place in March. So, after that your committee year is already ending. This means it's easy to combine with other committees!

The Music Committee
The Music Committee is another unique committee within EPU. Its main goal is to organize our yearly Music Night is cooperation with Study Association IK. The theme of this evening is to bring together musical artists within the Faculty of Arts and create a full evening of musical entertainment. If you are interested in learning how to organize a concert night, manage a group of Artists, promote your evening, and make it all together a great evening, then consider joining the MusicCie this year!

Supportive Board Member MusicCie '19-'20

The Social Committee
I was in the SocialCie for the last two years, and absolutely enjoyed it. If you like organizing events, you are creative, and have a rich fantasy, then the Social Committee is a perfect fit for you. Not only can you organize events that your fellow students like to do, but also events that seem fun to you. An example for that, was that I thought that EPU did not organize enough sport events. That led to me becoming the first Commissioner of Sports, which was very fun to do! What I want to say with this, is that everything is possible in the SocialCie and that all kinds of ideas are welcome in this committee. If this seems interesting to you, and you want to be in one of the most involved committees, then you should sign-up for the SocialCie!

Thomas Prijs
PR SocialCie '18-'19
Commissioner of Sports SocialCie '19-'20

The Travel Committee
Hi! Two years ago I had the honor of being the Vice Chair of the Travel Committee. I became really good friends with my fellow committee members and it was fun, but also challenging at times to plan the whole thing. The best part is the trip itself of course, it’s so rewarding to see everyone enjoying the activities you planned for them and having so much fun together! Unfortunately, last year we had to cancel our trip to Oslo due to the virus.
However!!! No one knows what’s going to happen this year, nothing is certain so we might as well be able to go on our annual trip in April, which truly is the highlight of the year. And when we do, it is going to be EPIC AF because everyone will be living their best lives celebrating this shit show is finally over. I know you want to be part of the committee that organizes the best trip ever and I know you know it too.
(So sign up!!) xoxo

Vice Chair TravelCie '18-'19

The Calicocat Research Institute
Dear members,

I would like to bring a vacancy within my organization to your attention. For the Calicocat Research Institute, I am looking for students from different academic backgrounds who want to participate in a research committee. The aim of the committee is to have an interdisciplinary team of students working on conducting research, focusing on the topics that underpin our organisation (the future economy, direct democracy and inclusivity). In doing so, we work towards obtaining paid research assignments, since it is important to us that students receive fair remuneration for their work. The time investment will be about 8-10 hours a week, which can be freely filled in by mutual agreement. We are therefore looking for students with good analytical skills, who are curious, flexible and able to work independently. What we can offer students is a professional network, experience in conducting research and, in the long run, significant financial compensation. The deadline for applying is the 23rd of September.

Further information about the research committee of the Calicocat Research Institute and the positions within the committee can be found on the website: research.calicocat.nl.

Kind regards,
Romy Dekker
