Message from your Captain

Ahoy Schooner campers and parents,

Welcome to Week 2 of Schooner's summer activity guide newsletter. We hope you enjoyed last week's content and are looking forward to this week's activities as much as we are!

Scroll through this email to see an overview of this week's activities. Also be sure to check out our website, linked here, for more in-depth content.

Creature of the Week

Each week, we will feature a local New Haven creature to discuss and learn more about together. This week, our Gather Corps member, Sadie, created a segment on oysters.

Check out the Creature of the week tab on our webpage to learn about oysters' habitat, diet, and behaviors, and MORE.

Our Gather Corps member, Sadie, compiled this informative video about oysters in the New Haven area. Check it out!
Follow Gather Corps on Instagram @gathercorps for more teen-led environmental education content!

DID YOU KNOW? A single oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day! Imagine what a whole reef of oysters can filter in a day!

Community Science Project: Are you curious to learn more about the plant and animal species that live in New Haven. Get involved with iNaturalist and our own New-Haven project, Naturally Curious New Haven.

With over 3900 nature observations already made by community members to Naturally Curious New Haven, you can explore iNaturalist and possibly identify some of the same plants and animals in your own neighborhood. If you decide to contribute your own observations, you're adding to a collection of data used by scientists all around the world. How cool is that!

Follow and contribute to Naturally Curious New Haven and see what other people have been finding in our area.

Activity Draw a picture of the LIS Creature of the Week and upload it to our Padlet, you may even see your drawing featured in the Summer Guide!

Nature on my Block

Follow and contribute to the hashtag #natureonmyblock to connect with the nature in your neighborhood and in New Haven.

In honor of this week's creature of the week, search for mollusks in your neighborhood and share using
#molluskonmyblock, slugonmyblock, snailonmyblock. Make sure you list the town you are reporting from! If you live near a beach, you can also report the different shells you find that belong to mollusks!

Check out this video of last week's Nature on my block observations!

Visit our Green spaces:

While Schooner is unable to take place in person this year, we wanted to include a list of Gather New Havens' (Schooner's Mothership) green spaces that, you and your family could visit for a socially-distanced nature outing.
