Dear Members,

The next professional learning activity for the year is scheduled for the month of August 2020.

Webinar
The Impact of Digital Technologies -
Beyond fake news: navigating our information ecosystem
for truth and balance

This webinar will be held via GoToWebinar on Saturday 15 August 2020 at 10.30am AEST. We are very pleased that Dr Kay Oddone, Head of Libraries Australian International School, Singapore will be our keynote speaker.

This one hour, online webinar is for primary and secondary teacher librarians and others who are responsible for school library services and/or involved in learning and teaching programs.

During the past few months as we have lived through the COVID-19 global pandemic, seeking reliable, trustworthy and accurate information has been more important than ever. Despite this, stoked by anxiety, fear, and often, the very best of intentions, the virus has infected not only millions of people, but also our communication channels and news sources, with information, mis-information and dis-information.

It has become apparent that establishing what is high quality, balanced and credible information, requires an understanding of our complex information ecosystem, in the face of increasingly subtle and expertly executed strategies used to forward a wide variety of agendas. As we increasingly come to rely on highly developed digital and critical information literacies, the role of the teacher librarian and library staff is more essential than ever.

In this webinar, you will learn more about the structure of our information ecosystem, the various strategies that are being used to manipulate information, and ways to promote critical thinking to enable teachers and students to effectively identify credible, reliable and relevant information from a variety of sources including social media.

Participants will learn:

  • What are we dealing with: message manipulation, micro-targeted messaging, deep fakes, artificial intelligence, bots and more
  • How is this affecting our students, teachers, community?
  • How sharp are our own critical evaluation skills?
  • How can we deal with this: strategies & resources?

Please note this activity is linked to the following Australian Professional Standards for Teachers:
  • Standard 2: Know the content and how to teach it with a specific focus on 2.6 Information Communication Technology (ICT)
