Kia ora Kāpiti

The rain may have watered our gardens but it hasn’t put a dampener on events around Kāpiti to keep you busy over the school holidays and beyond. Read on to check out the latest video in our #LoveLocal series, enter a Plastic Free July competition, learn more about No8Wire Week, and much more!

#LoveLocal gets a close shave…

Next up in our #LoveLocal series, we pop in for a chat (and a wee trim) with Bevan at Heritage Barbers in Raumati Beach.
The team were absolutely flat out after lockdown, taming hair and beards that hadn’t seen clippers for six weeks. Bevan talks to us about the generosity of our community during this time and why that has given him faith in keeping the traditional aspects of his barbershop alive.

COVID-19 financial support

Have you heard about the support available to Kāpiti residents, ratepayers and businesses who have been financially impacted by COVID-19? Our support package includes removal or reversal of rates late payment penalties and deferral of payments for water and property rates.
To be eligible, you need to apply for this support before 5pm on Monday 31 August 2020.
Read more on our website.

Go plastic free

Ditch those single-use plastics and join the Plastic Free July Challenge. Kāpiti is part of a regional competition - enter for a chance to win a pack of zero waste goodies to help on your plastic free journey!

We've got a number of Plastic Free events coming up for No8WireWeek including a supermarket trip with Rachel Benefield to shop plastic free, and workshops on how to reduce plastic and find affordable alternatives. Check out our website to see all the events and to register.

Waikanae Community Board Strategic Plan

The Waikanae Community Board is seeking feedback on its draft Strategic Plan for 2020-2022.
The plan reflects a focus on the critical projects, initiatives and partnerships that will position Waikanae to further grow and thrive. Read the plan on our website

Please provide your feedback via email to James Westbury by Friday 31 July 2020.

Community helping community

Recently, the Waikanae Community Board partnered with Council, Kāpiti Rotary, Anderson Park developers, Leith Consulting and Goodman Contractors to turn Council trees at Waikanae Park into firewood for those in Kāpiti who need a little help keeping warm.

The large gum and macrocarpa trees were overgrown and needed to be felled. Watch the team effort unfold on a glorious sunny day at Pharazyn Reserve.

Council meetings move with the times

While the COVID-19 limits on gatherings have now eased and normal Council meetings have resumed, the use of new technology will continue as a way of increasing openness and accessibility.

Council meeting rules have been changed to allow for the use of video linking to continue, which means members of the public who wish to participate in public meeting times can do so remotely.
This will make it easier for the community to be involved in the decision making process.
Livestreaming of meetings will continue, and video recordings are now available.
