With ridership and revenue declining, Amtrak will reduce Empire Builder service to three days a week starting Oct. 1.

As part of the cuts, Amtrak plans to reduce its workforce by 20% nationwide. Amtrak spokesperson Marc Magliari said the company will offer employees a voluntary incentive package. Magliari said he doesn’t know how many of Amtrak’s Montana employees would be impacted by the cuts. As of Monday, July 6, Montana reports a total of 1,249 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 37 new cases since yesterday, 548 active cases, and 23 deaths from the disease. State officials also report that 112 of the cases have resulted in hospitalizations, with 20 patients currently hospitalized, and 678 patients considered recovered. […]
