Donnelly Study Reveals How Bacterial Toxins Might Evolve to Cause New Illnesses


The coronavirus pandemic is a daily reminder of the consequences brought by a successful invasion of human cells by a pathogen. As a new study on bacterial toxins led by Professor Mikko Taipale shows, it does not take much for these encounters to turn deadly.

LGBTQ+ Health, Pride Month and Advocacy


Kristian McCarthy and David Lee are second-year MD students and co-presidents of Out in Medicine. They spoke about the importance of addressing health inequities faced by LGBTQ+ people, advocating for marginalized communities and using an intersectional lens when providing care. 

U of T Spin-off Empirica Therapeutics Acquired by U.S. Firm to Develop Immunotherapy for Glioblastoma


Empirica Therapeutics, a startup co-founded by Donnelly Centre investigator Jason Moffat, was acquired by a U.S.-based company developing off-the-shelf cell therapy products for cancer. 
 
 

When Two are Better Than One: Why Some Gene Duplicates are Retained While Others Perish


Whole genome duplication followed by massive gene loss has shaped many genomes, including the human genome. Now, a Donnelly Centre study by Professors Brenda Andrews, Charlie Boone and colleagues has found that gene retention depends on interdependency between gene structure and function.
 
 

Gaps in Data Impact Patients Considering Gender Affirming Surgery


Professors Yonah Krakowsky, Ethan Grober and Kinnon Ross MacKinnon are calling for more data collection on gender affirming surgeries to better understand surgical techniques and improve care for transgender patients.

In Memoriam

 

Professors David MacLennan, Ronald Williams and Deborah Zamble


Three professors with links to the Department of Biochemistry passed away recently.

University Professor David MacLennan was Chair of the Banting and Best Department of Medical Research, with a cross-appointment to Biochemistry. He studied the regulation of calcium in muscle and was elected to the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.

Emeritus Professor Ronald Williams was Chair of Biochemistry and later Principal of Scarborough College. He combined a passion for biochemistry with concern for the environment, and was widely recognized for his book, The Molecular Biology of Gaia.

Professor Deborah Zamble was a faculty member in Biochemistry and Chemistry, with a research focus on how bacteria handle transition metal nutrients. She received many awards including the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal, and was highly regarded as a graduate mentor and teacher.

Distancing, Testing and Tracing Key to Controlling COVID-19 this Fall: U of T Epidemiologist

Earlier this year, Professors Ashleigh Tuite and David Fisman predicted that social distancing would be required for months, not just weeks, to flatten the curve.

Tuite commented recently on what we have learned about the disease over the past several months, what we still don’t know and whether we will face another wave in the near future.
