Take a Seat and Talk about Domestic Violence

The Town has gone violet against violence, installing two benches in Cambridge with a splash of purple to honour all victims of Domestic and Family Violence.

The purple seats are part of the 'Purple Bench Project', launched in March 2018 by the Women's Council for Domestic and Family Violence Services WA (WCDFVS) to raise awareness of domestic homicide in WA.

Global research shows that family violence becomes more frequent and severe during emergency periods, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic, and an increasing number of families report violence for the first time.

The brightly-coloured benches are located on the City Beach foreshore, Challenger Parade, and Lake Monger Reserve, West Leederville.

There are now more than 80 purple benches in WA, which are all painted the signature 'Dark Violet' colour and feature a commemorative plaque.

The WCDFVS aim to reach a significant milestone of 100 purple benches in WA by the end of 2020.

Mayor Keri Shannon and WCDFVS Acting CEO Kedy Kristal sat together at the City Beach Purple Bench last week to discuss the Project.

Universities, high schools and sporting clubs are encouraged to get involved in the Project to start important discussions about domestic violence.

The annual '16 Days in WA to Stop Violence Against Women' 2020 campaign will run from Wednesday 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) until Thursday 10 December 2020 (Human Rights Day).

If you or someone you know needs advice or support please phone the Women's Domestic Violence helpline on 9233 1188 or 1800 007 339.
