Summer’s here!

This is a much different summer than any of us could have anticipated just three months ago. Many of us have been living in this very unusual extended time at home, but not able to connect with friends and family in typical ways. We have had to learn how to connect more online, shift our expectations with work and family and generally learn a whole new way of living. It has been hard, to say the least.

For Disability Concerns, our annual Leadership Event we host in Grand Rapids has had to be reimagined. This year, we will be bringing it to you online! This means there will be no registration fee, but we still need you to register. Just turn on your computer and enter into community with us! We hope you can join us August 5th and 6th, 11am to 2pm Eastern! —Becky Jones, Editor

We’ve compiled a list of favorite books connected to our ministry with input from some of our advocates. Do you have a book you think we should be reading? Let us know!

Book Club

Sitting Down with Author Amy Julia Becker

Disability Concerns Ministry hosted a book club with a few of our team members this year. We chose Amy Julia Becker’s book White Picket Fences: Turning toward Love in a World Divided by Privilege. We could not have imagined just how timely her book would be in light of our current climate regarding racism and privilege. We have included resources so you can participate in this conversation, maybe even hosting your own zoom book club!

Social Justice

One Response to Racism and Ableism

This year has brought an awakening on many levels of injustice within our communities. Our news feeds are filled with examples of the imbalance in our societies. We can no longer ignore the power indifferences that exist for many. Disability Network Lakeshore was one of the many organizations that put out a statement about the injustice we are seeing today. Terry DeYoung, Coordinator of Disability Concerns for the RCA is a member of their board. Their statement reaches to the very depths of the issue in such a profound way, we wanted to share it with you.
