Issue #4
July 2020
The SINCERE Talks webinar series kicks off with an insightful two-part session on the relationship between forest and landscape management, and watershed protection and hydrological services.

The webinar focuses on two overarching questions: how forest management affects hydrological services, with emphasis on water quality; followed by practical examples on how such management can form the basis of a payment for ecosystem services scheme.

Two reknowned speakers, Meine van Noordwijk (ICRAF) and Sven Wunder (EFI), discuss the issues with participation from the SINCERE Innovation Action Case Studies.

The webinar will take place online and is open to external participants.

Case study updates

Innovation lies embedded in the case study process

The project has proceeded to concrete steps of case examples by the time of our third stakeholder meeting.

The idea in the Kuusamo case study is to test paying for ecosystem services. Paying for services as such is nothing new; different funding methods are part of everyday life. Paying for some ecosystem services, like timber production, is so evident, that one does not even think about it.

But are ecosystem services valuable enough to pay for? Do we recognise these services, are they visible, understandable? Stakeholder discussions have been one means to make services visible. But further discussions are needed to shape their value. This is dialogue innovation in process!

New Biodiversity Strategy: investments are needed to build back better

The European Commission released its new EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2030 in May of this year. Humans and human society are dependent on nature for our physical and mental wellbeing, our economy and our ability to cope with climate change, pandemics and other threats and disasters. Investing in the protection and restoration of nature is critical for enhancing our resilience to these threats and will be central to our recovery from the COVID-19 crisis.

Featured video: Preserving landscapes and biodiversity in Kuusamo

An inspiring new video shows the value of Finland’s beautiful Ruka-Kuusamo region where wood is no longer seen as the only source of income from the forests there.

Upcoming events

IUCN will be welcoming leaders, champions of NbS across regions and sectors to establish a joint vision as well as commitments for turning NbS into action, through the Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions. The Standard aims to help governments, NGOs and business design, invest and scale-up action. It is the first-ever tool that will help design robust, durable actions for deriving benefits for people and nature. The event will be livestreamed on YouTube.
