We are delighted to announce that we will see your beautiful faces again very soon. Due to popular demand the Stokes Croft China shop will be opening every Saturday from 11am-4pm, starting next week (July 19). This will allow us some regular contact with our gorgeous customers until we re-open properly in September. Come by, say hi, don't be shy!

Stokes Croft Food Project needs your help

We wish we didn't have to ask again, but SCFP is facing a cashflow crisis, and people still need feeding. We have now converted all the money we had into delicious hot meals (over 3000 distributed so far) and are currently working our way through the slow process of making funding applications. At the moment we have just enough funds to provide our regular Sunday soup this week, then food production will have to be put on hold until we successfully raise some grants.

Are you able to put together a fundraiser for us, or can you make a donation to ensure there is no break in our meal service? On Sunday soup runs we're feeding around 80 people, then making another 150 meals on Tuesdays - these cost us around £2 per meal to make, so even a small contribution will help!

You can support SCFP by donating to our Fundsurfer, or by bank transfer to our Bristol Credit Union account - Sort Code: 30-94-80 // Account: 63313868

Looming homeless crisis

The Everyone In scheme is coming to an end and despite the frantic efforts of the local council, there just isn't enough accommodation for all the people currently housed in the hotels and hostels. As we look forward to the ending of the moratorium on evictions, and of the furlough scheme, we see the potential for a huge rise in homelessness and rough sleeping in Bristol this summer.

It is time for radical change and for ambitious and creative thought to halt the crisis we see coming down the tracks.

PRSC is currently collating some of the best ideas for how to handle this situation. If you have an insight to share with us please get in touch - from next week we will be sharing our own thoughts, plus the best ideas we've come across.

Staff Picks: Save Local Venues

Stokes Croft China's Maryem talks about her favourite mug...

Bristol is great in many ways. As a big fan of concerts and live music, Bristol's nightlife and diverse music scene lured me to move here from Switzerland two years ago. Already in my first attempts of exploring and getting to know a whole new city, I found myself dancing to live music nearly every night, and paid very little or no money. The music would mostly be played by rather small and to me, unknown bands, who advertised a strange crossover of different genres.

And this is only talking about the music I went to see.

It's the small and local spaces that gives newcomer artists a platform. Most of the greatest musicians that are today commercially successful, started off presenting their art on a small stage. Local venues are the core of our creative industries. And isn't it the spaces that are personal and individual that make a place a cultural hub?

Even without the pandemic we are going through, Britain's small venues are dying from gentrification. The independents are no longer able to pay the high business rates. Statistics have shown that 35% of venues across the country had closed down this last decade. We have to support our local venues or we lose them.

The posters covering this mug are from the salvaged poster board from the Bearpit. A place that I sadly could never see in its glory, but it had a lot of potential as an open arts and music venue.

We designed this mug to spread the message and to give independent venues the possibility to fundraise by selling them. If you're connected to a place that would like to do so, please get in touch.

News from Extinction Rebellion

"Last week, the Climate Change Committee, the Government's own climate advisers, released another staggering report on the Government's utter inaction. It warned the Government to start preparing for a 4˚C warmer world, a future implying the loss of billions of lives, with marginalised communities and those in the Global South impacted most.

How many more alarm bells do we need? We cannot carry on like this. This system is killing us. We want to live.

And that's why we need to bring the Rebellion back to our streets. From 1 September, we will peacefully blockade the UK Parliament in London until they act on the climate emergency, passing our three demands into law."

Pesky Pesticides

We recently told you about the Bristol ban on geophosphates and the local campaign that led to it. The Wildlife Trust has just released a comprehensive report on the rapid decline of the UK's insect population, alongside inspirational case studies of successful insect preservation projects around the country.

"The Wildlife Trusts do not believe that insect declines are inevitable if enough people care and act. But for nature to have a chance, we need to see at least 30% of our land managed for its recovery and we need to stop the unnecessary use of pesticides. Whether it's making more space for insects where we live and farm, making our towns and gardens pesticide free, or setting an ambitious target for pesticide reduction... we know what we need to do; we just need to get on with it. And fast."

Do you need support?

The council's Welfare Rights and Money Advice Service provides benefits and debt advice. You can find out what support is available by visiting the ACFA website  or by calling the We Are Bristol helpline on 0800 694 0184. Lines are open Monday to Friday, 8.30am-5pm.

Up in the Air

We're delighted to see that the Bristol Balloon Fiesta is undertaking a Fiesta Flypast this year. Bristolians will be able to watch the balloons from the safety of their own doorsteps, and more is planned over the course of the fiesta. Visit the Balloon Fiesta website for more info.

We're also pretty excited by Luke Jerram's Sky Orchestra, a massive musical dawn chorus planned for Bristol sometime in the coming weeks. A brand new composition by BAFTA composer Dan Jones will be delivered from the sky directly to people’s homes from a flotilla of seven hot air balloons with speakers attached.

Still a few of the Attenborough mugs left... we will be designing new ones soon using a different vintage print design so this is your last chance to buy these popular leafy designs!

The latest edition of The Land magazine is now available from the Stokes Croft China shop.

They currently have availability of an office space (24sqm) and the possibility of co-working within other offices. If any of this interests you, please contact gem.burgoyne@ethicalproperty.co.uk.

This week in pictures...

Show, don't tell. Show, and tell? If you have good pictures from around the city this summer, get in touch and we might share them.

The ongoing deterioration of the 'Too Many Billboards' posters by the M32 has led to some evocative scenes of urban decay. It's never nice to watch art die, but this transition has been fascinating at every stage. See last week's mailshot for what happened to the collage piece by object...

Our favourite image from the recent XR protests has come out of Cornwall, where activists sealed off the office of the Secretary of State for Environment as a crime scene.

When ya gotta go, ya gotta go.

People's Art Fair artist Oshi has been getting political in the park. The posters & other graff below is from unknown artists, get in touch if you know who we should be crediting!
We don't know who did these pieces, but the style reminds us of Jon D'oh.

Throughout this crisis our work with rough sleepers continues. Please click on the button below to support this ongoing work.
