Australian Beer Industry Fights Tax Increase

The beer tax in Australia has automatically increased by CPI every six months since 1983. But this year, in the midst of a global pandemic, which as devastated the Australian hospitality sector, the Brewers Association of Australia is asking for a halt to the scheduled increase.
“Tax is the most expensive ingredient in Aussie beer,” Brewers Association of Australia CEO Brett Heffernan told Perth Now. “As the hospitality industry battles with the devastating economic impacts of COVID-19 this latest increase in tax comes at a time when publicans and patrons can least afford it.” Read more...
Craft Up in Off-Sale but Many Struggle Due to Lose of On-Premise Business

The surge in grocery store sales has benefited high-end, full-flavor beer brands the most with craft sales up almost 23% and imports up 15% compared to subpremiums which are up 11% over last year for the period of early March to late June. Total beer sales are up 27.5%, driven by hard seltzers, which fall into the beer category for scan data, and are up a whopping 246.7%.
But the craft brewing industry overall is still struggling. While craft beer might be doing well in stores, craft breweries overall get about 40% of their total sales from draft beer which has fallen dramatically with the closure of bars, restaurants and their own brewery tasting room over much of the last three weeks.
