Managing COVID-19 Cases in Pharmacy Settings

On Tuesday 7th July the local NHSE&I team sent out an email detailing the processes to be followed if a member of pharmacy staff is identified as being postive for COVID-19. Please ensure that you have read this email (check your NHS mailbox!)

In summary:
  • One person amongst your pharmacy team being confirmed as having COVID-19 following a lab test is classed as a case. If this is unlikely to disrupt your levels of service you do not need to notify the NHSE&I team but you must notify Public Health England of all cases in a healthcare setting, following the SOP (see below).
    • For the East Midlands Public Health team, telephone: 0344 2254 524, press the option for the Health Protection Team
  • If one person tests positive (a case), and this will disrupt your levels of service, you will need to:
  • Having two or more members of your pharmacy team being confirmed as having COVID-19 following a lab test is classed as an outbreak.
For more details, please see the latest Management of COVID-19 case in Pharmacy, Optometry and Dentistry primary care settings SOP and the FAQs from the East Midlands NHSE&I Team.

Remote Consultations - Expression of Interest to be involved in a pilot

We've worked with the NHSE&I team across the Midlands to scope and initiate a small pilot to explore the use of video consultations in pharmacies, as well as in dentisty and optemetry.

The local team will be emailing out for expressions of interestand so if you are interested in being involved, please respond promptly, as the pilot will be on a 'first come, first served' basis. Note that at this stage there is no additiona funding for equipment such as webcams or tablets and so the expectation would be that pharmacies would need to use equipment already available.

The window for expressions of interest will go live at midday tomorrow (Thursday 9th July) and will close on Wednesday 15th July.

This will be via an online form, so wathc out for the email from the NHS team!

Quick Updates:

  • Thank you to those of you that have completed PSNC's Pharmacy Advice Audit. For those that have yet to do this, the deadline has been extended until Friday 10th July and so there is still time!

  • Remember to complete your occupational risk assessments in the workplace to help identify and protect staff at increased risk in relation to COVID-19

  • During the last few months there have been several changes to the Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework (CPCF) and regulations, and it can be difficult to keep up-to-date. PSNC have captured many of these in an easy to navigate way on their website at https://psnc.org.uk/the-healthcare-landscape/covid19/contract-and-regs-changes/
