MAG launches Conceptions of White: A Research Toolkit on the Origins and Meanings of White Identity
As part of the MacKenzie Art Gallery's ongoing response to the global uprisings against the systemic violence perpetrated upon Black, Indigenous, and racialized communities, the MacKenzie Art Gallery and the Art Museum at the University of Toronto have decided to share some resources from active research for a forthcoming co-produced exhibition, Conceptions of White. With a focus on the North American context, this 2022 (to be confirmed) exhibition will examine the origins, development, and present reality of “whiteness” as a concept invented to classify degrees of humanity and justify inhumane actions and social structures. The materials gathered in this toolkit disentangle fact from fiction in the mythology of white origins, revealing the complex web of white then black slavery, intra-European xenophobia, artistic invention, and colonial imperatives that have established this relatively new identity into something as natural and unquestioned as the ground we walk on. This research is active, evolving, and ongoing. More will be posted in the coming months, and the MAG welcomes your input and participation. Read more...

Museums Assistance Program - COVID 2020

On June 18th, Canadian Heritage announced that the first component of Phase 2 of the COVID-19 Emergency Fund for Heritage Organizations was launched The deadline is September 1, and that these emergency grants are awarded on a FIRST COME-FIRST SERVED basis, so apply NOW! Museums that are ineligible for the regular MAP funding are eligible for this emergency funding even if they have no regular paid staff or are only open seasonally.

The Museums Assistance Program (MAP) is now accepting applications for emergency assistance through the COVID-19 Emergency Support Fund for Heritage Organizations. This assistance will help organizations care for their heritage collections during these exceptional circumstances.

The COVID-19 Emergency Support Fund for Heritage Organizations, administered by the Department of Canadian Heritage, is meant to complement economic measures already announced by the Government of Canada, such as the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy, the Canada Emergency Business Account and the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance for small businesses.

Not-for-profit organizations with a heritage collection, such as museums, archives, and historic sites, may be eligible to receive funding. Indigenous organizations with a heritage collection are also encouraged to apply. Organizations can receive between $5,000 and $100,000 in emergency support.

To expedite funding requests, the Department has created a simplified online application process. For full details on program eligibility and information on how to apply, please visit COVID-19 Emergency Support Fund for Heritage Organizations. While the deadline to apply is September 1, 2020, applicants are encouraged to apply early as funds are limited.

Community Initiatives Fund (CIF) Proceeds with October 1, 2020 Deadline
Thanks to an Emergency Pandemic Response Gaming Grant of $5 million from the Government of Saskatchewan the CIF is able to proceed with its regular October 1 application deadline. This one-time grant to CIF is intended to help offset the loss of more than $8 million the CIF expected to receive this year due to the temporary closure of Casinos Regina and Moose Jaw due to COVID-19.

The grant will allow CIF to continue providing funding through the Community Grant Program to support the delivery of programs and services in communities throughout Saskatchewan. Organizations are expected to follow all provincial public health orders and recommendations when planning and delivering their programs.

CIF understands that COVID-19 may present unexpected challenges for Saskatchewan organizations that have received or are seeking CIF grants to support programs. CIF recognizes that your CIF funded programs may be impacted and encourage you to contact them to discuss any anticipated changes and they will work with you to explore options. Check out CIF's Response to COVID-19 FAQ.
