Holy Communion with our Online Worship!

Preparation Suggestions Below

Before our Online Worship begins, we suggest you set up a cup of wine or grape juice, and a small plate with a piece of bread or a cracker. You might also like to add a flower or a candle - or both! - to make it feel special.  You could lay down a nice napkin or place a covering over the cup and plate. What is most important is that you are present for this holy sacrament, and the people of God are praying together.

Second Mile Giving

“Second-mile giving” refers to an extra offering toward a special cause. Our second mile giving for July goes to Petaluma Peoples Services Center (PPSC). PPSC is a community of caregivers whose sole purpose is to help make people’s lives better. Last year they served over 12,000 people through their programs. The hands-on, face-to-face support that individuals receive from PPSC is wide ranging; counseling, job placement, gang prevention, daily hot meals, rides to the doctor, case management, financial assistance for homeless prevention, informational and referrals….People Helping People.

Offering can be given through Tithe.Ly or mailed to the Church Office at 504 Baker St.
*If donating to Second Mile Giving, please note "2nd Mile: PPSC" in your preferred offering method. Thanks!
NEW THIS WEEK

Help Choose Elim's New Paint Color - Vote!

Deadline THIS Monday, July 13!
To help us choose a new color for the outside of Elim's Sanctuary, we hired a professional paint advisor who provided us with three options. See color options below. If you want to see the colors in person you can view them on the the shortest wall of the Sanctuary, next to the Baker Street Fellowship Hall doors.

To vote, please pick the number you like best (#1: Green, #2: Blue with Bone trim, or #3: Blue with Gray trim) and email Erin, who will forward to the vote talliers, Rosemary Hart and Susan Rodkin. Thank you!

Update your Directory Photo!

Deadline July 31

We want to update directory photos, but since we can't do it in person we're asking for your help! Boring background optional! Individual shots preferred, but family shots welcome! Please send photos to Erin by July 31. This will also help Pr. Kathryn put names to faces until we are able to be together again. Thanks!

JUNE 29TH MARKED 50 YEARS!

“The Church of Christ in every age, beset by change but Spirit-led, must claim and test its heritage, and keep on rising from the dead”
(Fred Pratt Green, 1969).

Dear church,

Words matter. Words matter in our Scripture, in our hymns, in our governing documents, and beyond. Fifty years ago, on June 29, 1970, the Lutheran Church in America voted to change the word “man” to “person” in its bylaws and opened the door for the ordination of women. The American Lutheran Church achieved the same thing by resolution a few months later. The church was led by the Spirit to change. At the time it was scary for some. Fifty years later, it is now part of our heritage.

Fifty years later we celebrate the anniversary as a whole church. The influence of those decisions 50 years ago is not merely the impact on women. This is a celebration for the whole church, because the whole church has been strengthened by the gifts of ordained women in its leadership. We celebrate how these pastors have shared the Word, including with words of compassion, conviction, and curiosity. We also give thanks for the moments when there are no words, but they have offered their presence.

We also know that women who are pastors have struggled in ways men who are pastors have not. They deal with sexual harassment, disrespect, and often lower pay due to gender-based discrimination. The first women of color in our predecessor bodies weren’t ordained until 1979. And it wasn’t until 2009 that barriers to ordination were removed for LGBTQIA+ individuals in committed relationships. We know that racism and heterosexism complexify and intensify these problems. This discrimination is also part of our heritage, and something that we need to continue to work to eliminate.

In recognition of this 50th anniversary on June 29th, I invite you to express gratitude to a pastor who is a woman for how she has influenced your life. It could be by letter or email, or by other means. If you post on social media, please use the hashtag #thankyoupastor. If you would like more resources for celebrating this year, go to elca.org/50yearsofordainedwomen, which has an adult forum, Bible Study, video, and worship materials.

Fifty years after 1970, we also live in a world beset by change. I am grateful for the Spirit who continues to lead us and for the women God has called to minister to us.

I thank God for all of you who minister so faithfully.

In Christ,
Elizabeth A. Eaton

REMINDERS

Give a Flock and Help Fight Cancer!

A few members of the Elim Lites Relay for Life team have resurrected the Flamingo Flocking and are giving you the opportunity to "flock" someone. It's simple. Fill out the form, get it to the Reinhards, make your payment by cash or check made out to the American Cancer Society and it's done! You will make someone smile and support our efforts in providing services to cancer patients and working towards a CURE. This is a great way to say Happy Birthday, Happy Graduation, Thank You, Thinking of You....you come up with your own reason and they will see that the person/family is flocked!

Thank You to Landscaping Volunteers

A big THANK YOU to Don Bent, his friend Jim, Dave Bachman, and Walt and Cynthia Griffith for trimming back the bushes around the church and getting Elim's landscaping where it needs to be to paint the Sanctuary. The amount of effort you put into this project is not going unnoticed. We greatly appreciate you taking time out of your schedules to help Elim.
Thank you again,
Elim Office Staff

LOCAL AND GLOBAL COMMUNITY

Bounty Sponsor-A-Box Initiative

During these uncertain times when we’re all scrutinizing our supply chain, many people have opted to seek fresh produce directly from their local farmers through weekly box subscriptions (CSA) and farm stands. But this option isn’t available to many in our community due to the higher upfront costs of produce from small-scale local farms. For the past 12 years, Bounty has offered discounted prices for people on limited-incomes (read more here).

Join Petaluma Bounty, Singing Frogs FarmFEED Sonoma, and Sonoma Family Meal to ensure access to fresh, locally grown produce for community members on limited income. Together we are supporting our families, farmers, and local economy! Help us reach our $8,000 goal today!

Support PPSC During the COVID-19 Pandemic

PPSC is working tirelessly to make sure that our seniors and other at-risk community members are safe and taken care of.

Our support efforts during the pandemic include: Expanded Meals on Wheels routes, newly launched "You Are Not Alone"program,  counselors are working to provide online therapy sessions, working to keep our clients in their homes and to help them navigate the processes for filing for unemployment, disability & medical leave, and more.

For those of you with the means to do so, please donate what you can to help us continue to expand the essential services to a community in need, and to keep the lights on and make sure that our hard-working staff is paid during these rocky economic times.

Click here to Donate. Thanks as always for your continued support.

ELCA COVID-19 Response Fund

Weeks may have passed since you last walked in the doors of your congregation and worshiped, face-to-face, with your community of faith. To be sure, being the body of Christ looks and feels differently than it ever has before.

With congregations and ministries across the country, and a network of companion churches and partners in over 70 countries around the world, we anticipate this crisis will affect us all. Your gifts to the ELCA’s COVID-19 Response Fund will provide funds to the ministries of the ELCA most in need and best positioned to help. This includes our congregations as well as local and churchwide ministries capable of reaching and assisting those in need. If you are able, please help with a gift today. Donate Now
