CHUMASH

Parshas Pinchas - Chamishi with Rashi

Hashem tells Moshe Rabbeinu to remind the Yidden to do what Hashem wants, even after Moshe passes away. They shouldn’t forget to bring the korbanos that Hashem asked them to bring.

Hashem tells Moshe Rabbeinu to remind the Yidden to always bring the Korban Tamid two times every day, just like Hashem said. (These pesukim are a part of davening, the paragraph that starts “Vayedaber” that we say in korbanos before Shacharis and Mincha! After the Churban, Shacharis and Mincha take the place of these korbanos, so we say this paragraph before davening.)

Hashem also tells Moshe to remind the Yidden about the special korban of Shabbos. (We say these pesukim in Musaf on Shabbos, since our davening then takes the place of this korban.) He reminds them about the korban for Rosh Chodesh, too. (Since we can’t bring the actual korban, we say THESE pesukim in Musaf of Rosh Chodesh, which is in place of bringing the Rosh Chodesh korban. These pesukim are also part of the Kriyas HaTorah for Rosh Chodesh.)

The Torah tells us the details of the animals that are brought for each of these korbanos, and the Mincha (flour and oil) and Nesech (wine) brought together with each of them:

TAMID: (2 times every day) 1 lamb for an Olah

SHABBOS: 2 lambs for an Olah

ROSH CHODESH: 2 bulls, 1 ram, and 7 lambs for an Olah AND a goat for a Chatas (in case any Yidden did an aveira by coming into the Beis Hamikdash or bringing a Korban while they were tomei without realizing it)

Each animal brought for a Korban Olah also needs a Mincha (fine flour and oil) and a Nesech (wine).

For each lamb (Keves) : 1/10 eifah of flour mixed with 1/4 hin of oil, and 1/4 hin of wine

For each ram (Ayil): 2/10 eifah of flour mixed with 1/3 hin of oil, and 1/3 hin of wine

For each bull (Par): 3/10 eifah of flour mixed with 1/2 hin of oil, and 1/2 hin of wine

This shiur in Chumash, about the Korban Tomid, is very special to learn now! Do you know why? Because, as we will learn later, during the Three Weeks we are supposed to learn about the Beis Hamikdash and the Avodah in the Beis Hamikdash. The Korban Tomid was part of the Avodah every day!

In Tof-Shin-Lamed-Tes, the shiur of Chumash for Shiva-Asar B’Tammuz was the same as for today, about the Korban Tomid! The Rebbe said that this was very special, because learning about the Beis Hamikdash during this time makes the Churban weaker and brings the Geulah faster!

TEHILLIM

83 - 87

In Kapitel Pey-Daled, there is a posuk (and a niggun) with the words “Yeilchu Mechayil El Choyil, Yeiro’eh El Elokim Betzion.” This means that people who trust in Hashem go from strength to strength, and they will see Hashem in Yerushalayim.

The Rebbe explains the connection — that “Yeilchu Meichayil El Choyil,” when we are always doing better than before, is what brings “Yeiro’eh El Elokim Betzion,” that we will be able to go to the Beis Hamikdosh! Every single hour, there is a new chayus from Hashem in the world, that gives us new chances and new kochos to be able to do even more than before. We need to take every new opportunity that Hashem gives us and make it into a mitzvah!

TANYA

Igeres Hateshuvah Perek Hey

We are learning what is special about a Yiddishe Neshama. This way we can understand what happens to it when someone does an aveira, and how a person can do Teshuvah.

We said that every Yid has the name of Hashem (Havaya) in his neshama. When we serve Hashem in a HIDDEN way (with our minds and hearts), we get chayus from the first half of Hashem’s name. When we ACT the way a Yid should, we get chayus from the last letters of Hashem’s name.

The chayus of Hashem which is in our neshama also gives chayus to the Guf (body). The chayus that connects us to Hashem is like a rope that ties two things together — it connects the Yid to Hashem, and Hashem’s chayus to the Yid.

When a Yid does an aveira that deserves the punishment of Kareis, it cuts off the chayus from Hashem to the guf.

The chayus that comes to a Yid is a very strong chayus from Hashem. It is compared to blowing, which takes much more energy than speaking!

When a Yid does a Kareis aveira, it’s like he is putting up a wall to block that powerful koach of Hashem.

That’s why in the times of the Beis Hamikdash , a person who did an aveira that deserves kareis passed away before he got old, because he couldn’t live without the chayus of his neshama. (Later this changed, and we will IY”H see why later.) He still had some chayus left from before he did the aveira so he is still able to live for some time (and has a chance to do teshuvah), but then the chayus runs out.

So what happens with other aveiros? It also weakens the Yid’s connection with Hashem, but it is a little different. Our connection to Hashem is like a big “rope” made of 613 strings, one for each mitzvah. If someone does an aveira, it’s like Chas Veshalom cutting ONE of these strings, which makes the entire rope of connection weaker.

We will learn later how to strengthen the connection again, through Teshuvah!

HAYOM YOM

Yud-Zayin Tammuz

Today is the fast of Shiva-Asar B’Tamuz. One thing that happened today is that this was the day when Moshe Rabbeinu broke the luchos after seeing the Yidden doing the aveira of the Cheit HaEgel. Because of this, Moshe Rabbeinu went back up onto Har Sinai and received a second set of luchos from Hashem. In today’s Hayom Yom, we will see that there is really something good and special that we got because we needed a second set of luchos!

There were four differences between the first and second Luchos:

1) The Luchos themselves: The first luchos were made by Hashem, but the second ones Hashem told Moshe Rabbeinu to make.

2) The writing of the luchos: The words of the Aseres Hadibros were not engraved in the second set of luchos the same way that they were in the first.

3) The Yidden: When the Yidden got the first luchos, they were like tzadikim (at Matan Torah). But when they got the second Luchos, they were like Baalei Teshuvah.

4) Moshe Rabbeinu: Moshe Rabbeinu got a special Ruchnius light as a present with the first luchos, but it was taken away by Cheit Ha’egel and with the second Luchos, he only got it back on Shabbos.

It looks like the first Luchos were much better!

But there was something very special about the second Luchos: They were given along with Halacha, Midrash, and Aggadah — we got much more Torah! And also, Moshe’s face was shining with the second Luchos.

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Shiur #339 - Mitzvas Asei #191, #214, Lo Saasei #311, #58, Asei #221, Lo Saasei #263, #264

Today we are making a Siyum on the ENTIRE Rambam — the last of the 14 sefarim! We are also finishing the last mitzvos in Sefer Hamitzvos that match with these halachos.

In today’s Sefer Hamitzvos, we learn 7 mitzvos:

1) (Mitzvas Asei #191) Before the Yidden fight a war that isn’t a mitzvah (Milchemes Reshus), a kohen needs to remind them about the mitzvos of a war.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Shoftim: וְהָיָה כְּקָרָבְכֶם אֶל הַמִּלְחָמָה וְנִגַּשׁ הַכֹּהֵן

The halachos are explained in Mesechta Sotah perek Ches.

2) (Mitzvas Asei #214) A chosson, who is married for less than a year, has to stay with his kallah and shouldn’t go fight in a war or go on a long trip.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Ki Seitzei: נָקִי יִהְיֶה לְבֵיתוֹ שָׁנָה אֶחָת וְשִׂמַּח אֶת אִשְׁתּוֹ אֲשֶׁר לָקָח

The halachos are explained in Mesechta Sotah perek Ches.

3) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #311) We can’t make a chosson who is married for less than a year go to the army or anything that will keep him away from his new wife.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Ki Seitzei: וְלֹא יַעֲבֹר עָלָיו לְכָל דָּבָר

The halachos are explained in Mesechta Sotah perek Ches.

4) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #58) We are not allowed to be afraid of our enemies when we’re fighting and run away.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in from Parshas Eikev: לֹא תַעֲרֹץ מִפְּנֵיהֶם

The halachos are explained in Mesechta Sotah perek Ches.

5) (Mitzvas Asei #221) The mitzvah of Yefas Toar — if a soldier sees a non-Jewish woman he wants to marry while he is fighting.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Ki Seitzei: וְרָאִיתָ בַּשִּׁבְיָה אֵשֶׁת יְפַת תֹּאַר

The halachos are explained in the beginning of Mesechta Kiddushin.

6) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #263) He can’t sell the Yefas Toar as a maidservant to someone else.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Ki Seitzei: וְהָיָה אִם לֹא חָפַצְתָּ בָּהּ וְשִׁלַּחְתָּהּ לְנַפְשָׁהּ וּמָכֹר לֹא תִמְכְּרֶנָּה בַּכָּסֶף

7) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #264) He can’t use the Yefas Toar as a maid to do work for himself.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Ki Seitzei: לֹא תִתְעַמֵּר בָּהּ תַּחַת אֲשֶׁר עִנִּיתָהּ

The halachos are explained in Mesechta Kiddushin perek Alef.

Mazel Tov! Now we finished learning all 613 mitzvos according to the seder of the halachos of the Rambam!

RAMBAM

Hilchos Melachim

In Perek Yud, we learn more halachos about non-Jews. The last halacha is that we should do Bikur Cholim for goyim who are sick, bury them if they pass away, and give them tzedakah if they need it, for the sake of shalom.

In Perek Yud-Alef, we learn about Moshiach! The Rambam shows us that Moshiach isn’t just something nice that the Chachomim told us, it is a part of Torah! If someone doesn’t believe in Moshiach and doesn’t hope that he is coming, it means they don’t believe the Torah is true, chas veshalom.

Perek Yud-Beis: When Moshiach comes, a lot of very special things will happen. But did you know that that’s not the reason why all of the Chachomim and Neviim wanted Moshiach? They only wanted Moshiach because then we can learn Torah and do ALL of the mitzvos without anything stopping us!

Tam Venishlam — Shevach LoKeil Borei Olam!

Mazel Tov! Today we finished learning the Rambam!

INYANA D'YOMA

Siyum Harambam

Mazel Tov! Today is the siyum of the 39th cycle of learning Rambam three perakim a day and Sefer Hamitzvos, and the 13th cycle of learning Rambam one perek a day!

The Rebbe explained a very important reason for this takana:

Many years ago, in Yerushalayim, there was a big and beautiful house for Hashem, the Beis Hamikdash, where we were able to give Hashem presents and feel Hashem’s presence in the world. But goyim came and destroyed it, knocking down the walls, stealing the gold and silver, and setting everything on fire.

Why did Hashem let such a terrible thing happen?

The Gemara tells us that it was because the Yidden had Sinas Chinam, hating each other for no reason.

Now we miss the Beis Hamikdash. We suffer very much in Golus, and we want the Geulah.

When there is love and achdus between all of the Yidden, Hashem will take the Golus away, since now there is no more reason for the Golus to exist!

More than thirty years ago, the Rebbe gave us a very special way to bring more achdus and love between all the Yidden: That all of us should learn Torah together! And not just any part of Torah — the Rebbe told us to learn Rambam, which is has all of the halachos of the Torah, all in one sefer!

When we learn Torah, we become one with Hashem, and when many Yidden learn the same part of Torah, we also become connected with each other, because we are all connecting using the same channel.

B’Hashgacha Protis, the siyum this year is on Shiva-Asar B’Tammuz, when we remember the things that led to the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash. The Rebbe teaches us that now, when we are so close to the Geulah, we should think more about the good side of the Three Weeks — that they will soon become happy days, when Moshiach comes!

Fulfilling the Rebbe’s takana of learning Rambam every day will surely bring the achdus that we need and we will soon merit the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdash Hashlishi!

The Siyum Harambam is a good time to take on hachlatos to strengthen the learning of Rambam and Sefer Hamitzvos ourselves, and encouraging others to do the same!

TEFILLAH

Asking for Moshiach on a Fast Day

We add extra parts to davening on a fast day, like Selichos and Avinu Malkeinu.

We also have Kriyas HaTorah on a fast day. During the Kriyas HaTorah of Mincha, we leinVayechal,” about the teshuvah for the Cheit Ha’eigel and the second Luchos. We lein a haftorah from Yeshaya, who was the Navi that spoke the most about the Geulah.

In Shemoneh Esrei of Shacharis, the chazan says the paragraph of Aneinu, and in Shemoneh Esrei of Mincha, EVERYONE says Aneinu. We ask Hashem that on this special day of the taanis, Hashem should answer us (“Aneinu”) and fulfill our requests — especially to bring the Geulah!

HALACHOS HATZRICHOS

The Three Weeks

Today is Shiva Asar B’Tammuz.

Shiva Asar B’Tammuz is one of the four fasts we have during the year to remember the Beis Hamikdash. This is the day that the walls of Yerushalayim were broken, later leading to what happened on Tisha B’av.

(Many other sad things happened on Shiva Asar B’Tamuz too: Moshe Rabbeinu broke the luchos, the Yidden didn’t have any more sheep on this day to bring the Korban Tomid, a big rasha Apostomos burned a Sefer Torah, and resha’im put an idol in the Beis Hamikdash.)

Here are the halachos of the Three Weeks, which start today:

- We don’t make chasunas
- We don’t listen to music
- We don’t do things that need a bracha Shehecheyanu (like buying new clothes)
- The Rebbe tells us to learn the halachos about the Beis Hamikdash.

GEULAH U'MOSHIACH

What the World Will Be Like!

Today we are finishing the Rambam! The Rambam finishes his sefer with the halachos of Moshiach. We will learn the end of the last halacha of the Rambam and make a siyum on the entire 14 seforim of the Yad Hachazakah!

In the last halacha of the Rambam, the Rambam describes what the world will be like when Moshiach comes. Here is the second half of that halacha:

Velo Yihiyeh Eisek Kol Ha’olam — Everyone in the world won’t be busy with other things

Ela Ladaas Es Hashem Bilvad — Except to know Hashem!

Ulefichach Yihiyu Yisrael Chachomim Gedolim — So the Yidden will be great Chachomim

Veyodim Devarim Hasesumim — They will know hidden things

Veyasigu Daas Boram — They will understand Hashem

Kefi Koach Ha’adam — As much as it is possible for a person to understand.

Shene’emar — Like the Navi Yeshaya says

Ki Malah Ha’aretz Deiah Es Hashem — The world will be full with the knowledge of Hashem

Kamayim Layam Mechasim — Like water covers the ocean!

~

When we make a siyum, the minhag is to connect the end of what we learned with the beginning of the next thing we are learning, or the beginning of what we learned. Now we will learn a connection between the end and beginning of the Rambam, as the Rebbe explained at one of the siyumim.

As we just saw at the end of the Rambam, we learn that when Moshiach comes, everyone will be busy with one thing: “Lodaas Es Hashem Bilvad” — only to know Hashem!

We can understand this by looking at what comes next — the beginning of the Rambam! Just like on Simchas Torah, when we finish the Torah and start again right away, when we finish the Rambam we go right back to the beginning to start again.

At the beginning of Rambam, we learn that Hashem is what makes everything in the world exist: “Yesod Hayesodos Va’amud Hachachmos” — the basis of everything is, “Leida Sheyesh Sham Matzui Rishon,” to know that there is a first Existence (Hashem), “Vehu Mamtzi Kol Nimtza” and Hashem is what makes everything else exist.

When Moshiach comes, everyone will be able to see that everything is really chayus of Hashem!

That will change how we look at everything in the world. Everyone, Yidden and goyim too, will be looking at and thinking about the Elokus that is inside of, and IS, everything that exists. That helps us understand the end of the Rambam, that “Lo Yihiyeh Esek Kol Ha’olam Ela Ladaas Es Hashem Bilvad” — the whole world will be busy understanding Hashem all the time, which is true existence!
